Thanks Mike. Looks like I have a little work to do this weekend. Ferrari said that the piston is stuck and the sprayed some lube hoping it would come out on it's own until it goes in for service next month. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help and the photos.

If you look down your shifter you will see that the pivot ball has a large flat machined on the right side. There is a spring loaded piston (approx. 5/8" dia. coming in from the right side of the shifter housing) that presses against the flat to hold the shifter in the center slot (2, N, 3) of the pattern. When you move the shifter left or right the piston is forced back in it's bore by the moving flat. Either the piston is sticking or the spring is broken. Another possibility is that the circlip holding the spring may have come out releasing the spring. Try looking into the shifter with a bright light to see if the piston is moving. The bottom line is that the console will have to be pulled or at least moved to access the shifter assembly. Here are a couple photos of my shifter assembly (308 GT4), you can just see the top of the bore for the piston on the right side of the shifter box in the second photo.

I took my car to ferrari today and they serviced my transmission and noticed the shifter can pivot in the gate. Meaning that it can turn with a twist of the wrist. They said that there is a pin that keeps it from doing this. They will fix it next month. They did not seem concerned but for some reason I am obsessing about it. They spayed some oil and cleaned up the pepsi my son spilled in the gate and said that the pin will work it way out and if it does not then they will service it. Does anyone know how to fix this pin or how to make it pop back out? I really don't want to wait until next month but I don't want to take it in just for this as well.
