Are the ECU's an integral part of the warning system or are they mostly needed if you are driving the car hard(racing) at high speeds for long amounts of time? If they are disconnected and driving is normal, is this a total risk or something to think about instead of replacement? Any opinions? |

I just registered my Euro Mondial 2 week's ago in CT. Went to state run emissions testing where they inspect with mirrors underneath car to verify cats an such. Well i have none an they did not catch it. Got the impression unless there was a neon sign saying "cat should be here" underneath i was pretty safe. |

Hey Billy, I'll be in the Oceanside area probably in May-June with my 87TR. Maybe we can get on the Southern State and look at each other at 40 mph. I grew up there and know the parkways well. Keep in touch. |

I live on Long Island. And as long as they do not do a visual test for cats you will get away with it here. You see here we do not have the state doing the tests. It is done by private owners of gas stations. As long as your engine is running right you have nothing to worry about. My car has 35,000 miles on it and runs better than new. |

Thanks for the info Frank and Billy. I'm heading to N.Y. by June Billy, I'll be in Long Island. Where you at? Maybe the pipes will be on the car by then. |

I have replaced the cats and precats with test pipes and the power is awesome. I live in NY which has one of the strictest emmission tests. It passed with flying colors. Just goes to show how efficient Ferrari engines run. |

The test pipes I used on my TR replaced both the pre-cats and the cats. I bought them from TRutlands(770.493.8852) for $350.00 or so. There are a lot of them out there so if TRutlands don't have anymore, run an Ad in the Ferrari Market Letter. |

Good advice Steve. Will think about the mods before I do anything. Have a good night. Jim |

jim -- On a US TR, I think it doesn't make much sense to bypass the cats yet leave the precats in place -- IMO, the (smaller) precats are much more restrictive than ~5" diameter cats, but don't look for a huge power increase no matter what you do. The best things about decatting a TR (or any F) are the reduction in underbonnet temperature and the more aggresive exhaust acoustics, but there is the legal factor to consider so I really can't make a specific recommendation to make a modification. On the other hand, being complete and "unmolested" never seems to hurt a US TR's value. |

Thanks Steve. I will check on those leads...Do you have an opinion about doing the cat bypass??? I'm sure you do. I appreciate your input. Jim |

jim -- I think you can get the cat warning light ecu's for about ~$300 each from the discount F part suppliers -- T. Rutlands, ferraripartsexchange, etc. I paid ~$270 each for a pair of the later ones (with the multi-plug water proof connector) from T. Rutlands. Your TR probably use one of the earlier versions -- but worth sending a few emails IMO to find out their (more reasonable) prices. |

Great response Frank. I'm leaving Cally so I'm not concerned about CHIP's, The test pipes you talk about, are they easy to find, and where would I look. I figure I will keep the cats for future inspections or resale of car. Thanks |

I removed the Cats and replaced them on my 86 TR and it made a world of difference in sound(plus) and performance(plus). It would not pass an emissions test(minus) without them. The test pipes are cheaper(plus) than the cats too. But, in California they will probably confiscate your car(minus), arrest you(minus) and charge you a big fine(minus) if they catch you. |

So my ecu's need to be replaced, 87TR, $804 apiece from ferrari. I have heard that you can remove the catalytic converters which will increase performance. I am looking for the plus and minus for doing this. Also what kind of a job as far as labor and expense since with a California equipped car. |
