Check the control arms to your suspension. I made a loose one, and it made that same sort of noise. Art |

Here is a stab in the dark...you back "up" your driveway so your garage is flat and the driveway slopped. You cut your wheel which lowers the car just a bit due to caster issue and you scrape your nose on the ground. A 355 can only handle a 0.2 slope. |

This is a long shot but I had a similar problem with my Porsche. I would hear a clunk whenever the car was cold and I reversed the car. It turned out to be the handbrake shoes binding. I lubricated the release mechanisms and all has been well since. Although this was a rear of the car problem, noises can seem to manifest themselves from different parts of the car. |

I know it sounded like the noise came from the front, But; Clunks associated with steering inputs could be bad CV joints in the rear, pretty easy to check for loose joints with the rear up on jacks. The inners get hotter and thus tend to fail faster.

On my 328 one of the brake calipers came lose and would make a clunking sound when you backed up but was fine going forward. It seems the caliper would jerk back when backing making the noise. Its worth a check. |

My 308 does the same thing from time to time with similar conditions. I had Ferrari look at it and said that there is nothing wrong. Go Figure. |

Not to alarm you, but I remember reading in the FORZA Buyer's Guide that steering rack mounts can crack. There, now you have one guess. |

i've experienced an odd noise in my 355 twice now. whenever something out of the ordinary happens once i usually just chalk it up to Italian engineering. when it happens twice i pay attention :-) both times it happened when the car was cold and i was backing up my driveway. when i cut the wheel sharp to the left i heard a distinctive, non-subtle, "clunk" that seemed to emanate from roughly the center of the front axle (as best as one can estimate these things). unreproducible doing similar manoeuvers in a parking lot, etc. etc. etc. absolutely no aberrant behavior otherwise. the car runs as before. steers as before. handles as before. etc. just a weird clunk. twice. backing up the driveway. anybody have a guess? and, no, i didn't hit a woodchuck - twice. not that i would mind that, but they're pretty fast for their bulk. thanks, doody. |
