Well, there are really two units msd has for this. The one im using is programable, and a little tricky to use. However they have the same unit thats not programable. It's programed by msd factory, which will probably work just as well since msd is performace oriented.

Let me also suggest, altho I havent tried it. MSD has two new units I saw that use a coil for each cylinder. Could be a way to go for people who are tired of using the expensive caps and rotors. These units do away with the distributors and use a total of 8 coils. It's msd part number DIS-4 .

What do you do though, is it like setting the idle (with a screw adjustment) or is it much more complex? Where do you adjust it?

I have a ferrari book that shows the advance curve set by factory. That will give you a base line, from there you can play with it for better performance.

How do you know what to set the advance, retard, etc? How would you do it? I don't have a problem, I'm just curious. Thanks.

Well putting those coils on fried my ignition box. I just spent the day converting my ignition to Ford Duraspark, and it works... hahaha! I can drive again.... The conversion is very simple and now if the brain go's bad I can replace it for 18$.... Wasnt sure if it was gonna work or not, but seems to be working now no problems. The only difference is there is no retard or advanced built in, so on tuesday I will buy MSD var-time boxes and add those on, so I can program my own timming advance into the igition boxes.
Wow what a sound difference also. The overall sound at idle sounds alot healthier. I guess the old ignition system ferrari uses must be real out of date now..
Over all it cost me 54$ to convert the igition so far + what the msd var-time will cost i will guess about 100 each. So total cost is 254$... I dont know what a brain box from ferrari costs but Im assuming it probably alot more then 254$...
If anyone wants to see the wiring diagram and parts I used I will scan it sometime this week, if anyone is interested.
Oh, by the way makes with adding msd boxes, you can have full control of all timing, advancing, retard, ect...

When I changed my coils to Mallory, the first set does just what U described! The dealer tried a different model from Mallory and they work perfectly, after a couple of tries! Please check your ignition wire connections to the distributors! Maybe one or more of them have become loose! Also check your electrical connectors to the coils.

Ok, I have an 81 308 GTSI... I wanted to put some blaster2 coils on it so I installed them. But when I started the car it wouldnt run correctly. I double checked the wiring and it was correct... So I put the old coils on, now the car still wont run right.. It smokes and backfires every now and then. It's all back the way it should be, any idea's???
