Hey Paul I finally set the idle mixture to 3 1/2 turns from stop and 99% of the popping is all gone during deceleration as well as going down hill. I am very happy with that. The only thing that I am getting now is a stumble on hard acceleration from stop (not when the car is already moving). So I am guessing that it may be the progression circuit in the carburetors and not the crane cam ignition itself. What do you think? |

Paul I thought the idle mixture is a bit lean at about 2 1/2 turns out (+/- 1/4 turn). I will get it to pass smog first (lean helps) and then adjust for more performance. I will also try the 5-6 BTDC timing too. Will let you know. |

I found with the stock setup that if the timing was too far advanced, it popped on engine braking like yours. I retarded my timing to 5-6 BTDC to reduce it and found backing the idle mixture screws out did the trick. Just try the mixture screws, say, another full turn out. Mine are at 6+ turns out, I know it sounds high. I have to change my idle jets to get the screws back in a couple of turns but the pop is from a lean mixture most likely because the engine rpm is up and the fuel is being pulled from the idle ports. |

I did the Crane cam conversion thing on my 75 GT4, and had just a few miles on it by now. I can not say that I am 100% satisfied with the results. I still notice quite a bit of popping especially when decelerating, or going down hill in gear. I was hoping that much of the popping would go away. Response to throttle is still some what hesitating, and that is supposed to get better with Crane. Fuel pressure is set at 2.5 psi (is this within acceptable range?) Carbs are all synched up (except for one of the 8 throats which is out maybe a hair and I did not have the inclination to adjust it yet) Timing is set (and checked to be) at 7 degress BTDC for both distributors. Removed the spark plugs (NGK BP6ES) and found that they are all brown looking with no oil or gasoline so the idle mixture is pretty well set. What have people who converted found with their Crane system?
