Yes, some sort of parts cross reference would be totally invaluable. I could care less in how it is implemented. Whatever works. |

Rather than a 308 Ferrari Tailight, try a Fiat, Samo-Samo |

87 Mondial 3.2 Ignition Switch (Electrical Part) Made by Sepia in Italy, Ferrari Part is hard and $$$ to get, the same units are used in m any 80's Alfa's and cost about US$50, the 3 wire versions are common but ideally you need the 4 wire version althought the 3 wire will work ok, just wire acc to PWR. Electrical rear mirror switch, Ferrari part cost about US$150, same part from BMW dealer about US$40 The starter motor is typically a standard Bosch part, never by one from Ferrari! I would love to see another Parts sub section under the Technical Q & A. The board could contain maybe twenty 'posts' like Cooling System, Ignition System, Steering, Electrical, Fuel, etc. Then each of us could 'reply' to the post with the latest part number equivilents. This would save Rob the hassle of maintaining yet another section of the site and also absolve him of any responsibility for the accuracy of the information. To include the information you have all you would have to do is reply to, say, a post under Ignition System. The format would be like so ; Mondial Distributor Cap Ferrari PN ******** = FIAT Spyder PN********. Or in the same thread, Tesstarossa Ignition Lead PN ******** = Dodge PN ******* That way it would be easy to scan down the thread for the information as it is unlikely there will be hundreds of alternitive parts under each 'Post'. What say ya'all ? Eamon Ireland

Thank You Jay! These are the kind of tips I'm after. The cross reference info on this site is good but there are tons of other tips out there. Keep them coming. |

I recently needed a new sender unit for the fuel gauge. It's located inside the tank on an arm with the float. Ferrari only sells the entire arm for around $400 Canadian. I found that the sender is the exact same item found on Fiat spyders. The only difference is the color, otherwise a perfect match, no modifications needed, just patience to remove the sender. Cost of the fiat arm was about $100 Canadain. You still had to buy the whole assembly, but mutch cheaper without the "yellow box" |

Check the 308 Parts Cross Reference information under the Parts and Service link at the top of the main chat page. This is a good place to start. This forum is also a good place to be when maintenance issues arise. Lots of knowledgeable owners here. Good luck! John |

I am not looking for some magic formula to make Ferrari ownership any cheaper. From time to time it is necessary to buy something in the 'yellow box' and it will be expensive. I am just trying to compile a list of parts or procedures, as trivial as they may be, that can be carried over from other cars or manufacturers. Once done, I would like to post them so that other owners can save a buck here and there. |

David is correct that you aren't going to save much money on "big ticket items", but big ticket items rarely go wrong. Even so, there will come a point in 308 ownership, probably years and years from now, that if your engine needs rebuilding you would be asked to pay very high prices for the last remaining stock for pistons or valves or something like that. If that occurs, you can certainly save money by having pistons made by JE or Ross or someone like that. Even valves can be made fairly inexpensively. This is what 1950s/60s owners should do (and sometimes do) other than pay crazy prices for parts to someone who has found a few NOS parts. Also, many of the things that go wrong with a car and need to be replaced such as switches, fuel pumps, window motors, distributors, ignition units, and so on all have options other than the Ferrari dealer for replacement. You will find discussions of many of these on this forum. In the past I would have recommended Superformance.co.uk as a place for good prices on 308 parts. But recently many of us have had problems with parts bought from them for 206/246/308 cars. So if you do buy from them, question what you are getting first. (You'll find some discussion of superformance in the archives here too).

Well, there's the old trick of replacing that expensive Ferrari motor with a Ford, Chevy, or Honda motor.. No seriously, Ferrari ownership is expensive,.."all things being relative".. and I don't know of any magical parts out there that make ownership any more affordable.... Sure some of the little switches here and there will interchange with other cars, but there are no big ticket items that will... As far as aftermarket performance parts, there are some out there, but remember the 308 series is an old car, and most aftermarket companies concentrate on the newer models like the 360.... Maybe some of the other folks here can give some insight into this... Good luck with your search. |

Hi All, I am new here and am crazy about the 308. I am in the market for a carb GTB and would like to know your tips for replacing Ferrari parts for less expensive / better performing ones. Please post any tips you may have as I am trying to put a list together that will make Ferrari ownership all the more affordable. Post the obvious, the strange and even the obsurd. I really want to know as many of your tricks as possible. Thanks in Advance |
