Bruce, I do not have the basis to state firsthand use of TR filters, but I will tell you this. I have used them in off road racing without ANY ill effects.
On Nick's Web Site there is a pic of me flowbench testing a 308 element, followed by a K&n. The K&N flowed right close to 40 percent more. I use this company's filters on everything, Harley, et al. Believe it or not, There is one on my computer right now. I happened to have an extra that could be adapted(siliconed in place). After the dust killing my power unit. That was my decision so that it won't happen again. Mind you, this is the Corporations 'puter,so I don't have to tell you how important its health is! hope that sheds some light.

How about an 84 QV Mondial? I checked the two websites you listed and only find part 33-2518 for a 308, not sure if the 308 uses the same filter? anyone know? I called K&N customer service, the guy was no help at all.

Bruce; When the filter comes in I will give you a hand installing it, as it is not just the two little screws on the cover that needs to be removed, but the whole unit....great fun.

Bruce; I run a K&N on mine, and have put them in the bikes and other cars for years. The only problem was that I had to get it from the UK as most places do not carry or can get a filter for a TR.

I have used K&N filters on all my cars and motocycles since the early 1970s and have had no ill effects. Some of the vehicles have gone over 150k miles with a K&N filtering the air. As long as you keep them clean and oiled they are great IMHO.

Ken,

I have had a K&N in my TR for over 4 years now (22,000 miles) and haven't had a single problem related to it. I read an article about Dinan re-branding and supplying K&N filters under their own name and hence the propaganda. Read this (Dinan):http://www.mindspring.com/~pmbenn/dinan3.htm

Here is a quote from Mr. Dinan from this article:
http://sanjose.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/1998/08/17/smallb4.html

"Other companies sell these air filters that are made by K&N Inc. that are supposed to increase horsepower," said Mr. Dinan. "We did a test and found that because most kits put the filter behind the radiator, the intake sucks hot air and actually decreases performance.

"So we designed an intake system that not only puts the [K&N] filter ahead of the radiator, but also separates it with a steel plate. By taking the time to engineer this intake system to breathe cold air instead of hot, we realized a real-world 14-horsepower gain."

I would say that Dinan endorses K&N rather than not according to this article. It is your choice however.

K&N part number for 84-91 TR:33-2799

Bruce:

Do not get a K&N. The K&N will allow much more dirt and crap into your engine than a regular paper filter. Even K&N own numbers tell you this. The K&N is for race engines that are rebuilt after each race. Your TR has enough power and you will not notice any difference. Save your engine and skip on the K&N. As to proof, Dinan for BMW refuses to use K&N because of the reasons stated above and finds that they do not offer any performance difference.
