BTW: The previous one-owner did drive the car aggressively during events, without actually racing it. This, the dealer stated, was probably why the stock diff. was in need of replacement, after ONLY 48,000 miles. In normal driving, the dealer stated that the stock diff. on the TR is quite adequate. Therefore, get a good history of the previous owners, their driving habits, etc. This, of course, would be difficult. My suggestion would be to look for one that has already been replaced, or buy it from a one owner old lady who only drove it on Sundays!!!!!!!...and NOT at the drag strip!!!!!!! Good luck |

When I bought my 88TR, with 48,000 miles, it was having the differential replaced with a 512TR type, by the seller. The Ferrari dealer told me that the original differential is marginal in strength, compared to the 512TR, hence, the change-over. They did say that this is a common problem with TRs. I cannot answer your other questions......just thought I would give you my experience. |

A TR is in the future plans and I hear from time to time on this site about them having diff problems. What specifically is going wrong with them? Is it a matter of them undersizing the gears and carrier for the torque so they fail? Is it a matter of quality control being on break when the gear sets were being inspected during manufacturing? I know of the 512TR upgrade. What is the difference between the two diffs? What sort of signs did you have prior to needing the diff repaired? (Im refering to, say, an 86-87 model) |
