A further update on my timimg belt change approach I posted the other day. If you remove all the hoses form the gas tank side, the tank can be removed very easily...practically falls out. The hard part is there are 2 flat straps holding the tank in. The one from the top is easy. The one from the side is a little tough because the "L" bolt that draws the strap tight is hard to loosen because it's tight to the bulkhead as the bolt is too long. Once you do get it off, cut about a half inch off the end an it will go together much easier. When you do put it back together tighten the top strap first then remove the cotter pin on the side strap, slide the "L" bolt out and install it loosely in the bracket on the bulk head. Then slip the band over the "L" bolt and install a hitch pin (throw cotter pin away). With the tank out, the timing belts are ridiculously easy to do!!! |

OK, saw the comment about a tip to share. Here's one that's simple. Many people, including magazine test drivers, complain about the steering wheel angle in a Ferrari prior to the recent ones with adjustable steering columns. The fact is, you can adjust the column angle on the earlier cars. Look under the trim where the column goes beneath the dash. You'll find two long through bolts mounted horizontally. These retain the column to the slotted column support. Loosen the two 13mm nuts on these bolts, reposition the column to your liking, and retighten the bolts. It's that simple. Sounds great Luch, my belts don't need changing for a while, but you can bet I'll keep that in mind when I do change them. MAGOO |

Just thought I'd offer a different approach to changing timing belts. I'm in the process right now on my 86 328GTS. The foward bank is extremely cramped with the A.C. unit so what I did is to partially remove the passenger side gas tank. Drain the gas tanks by removing the plug in the crossover line under the car. Then remove the 5 lines at the top of the tank, this will allow some air in to completely drain the tank you're working on. Then remove the rubber hose that connects to the cross over line. Next undo the flat bands that hold in the tank and loosen the tank from it's seat. Now you can work the tank out and with some patient maneuvering you can get it to rest over the rear caliper. From hear it's a breeze to change the foward timing belts because you can now remove the A.C. without disconnecting it and place it where the tank was. Plenty of room!!! Much easier. Good luck, Luch |

The early waterpump bearings I managed to buy in Singapore cost S$9 each (SKF). I have also requested a local seal shop to locate the mechanical seals for both the early and late waterpumps. Will update with model # when I get a reply. I just managed to obtain the timing belt tensioner bearings locally (SKF, Made in Italy) for less than US$50 each! I have yet to encounter any bearings on the 308 GTS QV that I have not managed to source locally! |
