That makes sense. How are you coming with your car that was in the fire? Any Luck? BRGDS, Magoo

This is one of Mark's cars, he is the reason I became involved in Ferrari. I am simply doing the repairs. The car was hit last fall at 45 MPH in the right rear, causing the engine to stall and ~10,000 in body damage. The car was repaired by no less than Marky's Autobody(Same guy, he fixed mine too, also thanks to GT Car Parts) The car was started recently and had a knock(unto that 4 cylinder 308 post again!) Evidentally the impact either caused the timing belt to slip or caused the valve to shear, whatever the cause, insurance is covering it because it was accident related. Hope no one else suffers the same fate.

I was thinking like Peter about this last night when I was goind to bed for some reason. It can be fixed and I would go that way. At least when you fix it you know it will be 100%. Getting another engine, head, etc would be costly (unless you pick up a steal) and you would still have to sort it out. Plus, any piston/head work is easy as hell on a 2 valve car, it's only on the QVs that it's a pain in the a$$.

The Toy Store sells cars with engines like that and calls them "race tested, highly modified".

My opinion:

This engine is not a paper-weight, it can be fixed. Yes that piston is trashed, but it looks like the combustion chamber in the head escaped major damage (the seats should definitely be replaced, along with those valves - me thinks it were those sodium-filled ones...).

So this is the rear (Destra) head, what's the front one look like?

Erik: "...(Marky's 81 Yellow GTBi- formerly of Hawaii Racing)..."

So is this a "new" car that has replaced your old one? (maybe the answer to the insured comment?)

Erik, I know you had a bad fire at your shop but, as the other guys are asking, How can you claim this repair of the heads with the broken valve through your insurance?

They have an entire two valve FI engine sitting on the showroom floor of WWoC. It's the block, heads, plenum, and intake manifolds. I think they want a couple bucks for it though.

Now is the perfect time to bump compression and add performance cams! Why go stock if you can add some more performance? It will still look stock on the outside. Insured?

What you have there is a very dirty and somewhat heavy paperweight. Easily, you can get a complete 2-valve 308 engine in good running order for the price of that repair. Although, a new set of liners, new set of pistons, and complete (used) heads may be available in the $2-3K range. If it were my car, I wouldn't want to rework that junk --- you'll have no idea what parts were potentially compromised. 308 parts are cheap...Throw those away...

This reminds me of a local 330GTC that broke a valve some years ago. I think the damage was even worse than this as the valve head bounced around inside and gouged the combustion chamber really bad. I believe the solution was to weld up the inside and machine out a new chamber. Because of the heat, I believe the cam bores had to be rebored to be straight. It might be cheaper and easier to find a used head, or a whole used motor for that matter. Mike Dopudja in Denver did the job. He has lots of experience and is highly regarded, but he is very busy and I'm not sure he is taking any more work right now. If you want to ask, email me and I'll give you his #.

~60,000 miles, yes that is the exhaust valve protruding from the piston.

Erik -- how many miles? Is the broken exhaust valve head stuck to the top of the piston?

The test results are in Mr. Gardoski, you have checked positive for the Ugly.
destra head
destra cylinders
Thank heavens it was insured.
Guess this is simply an opportunity to clean the engine!

Anyone for hints on who to have do the head repair?
