My "homejob" 308 gearbox rebuild has 12,000 miles and still going strong. Total out-of-pocket was something like $1300. I replaced syncros for 1, 2 and 3, but 4 and 5 were still in real good shape. The syncros were $200-ish each. All the different bearings were about $650. O-rings, bushings, etc. was probably another $50.

If I recall correctly, the 308 gearbox (once removed) only requires one ring nut socket (the big deep one). Total time to service was about 12 hours, including 3-4 hours of cleaning parts, castings, etc. Plus another 2 hours once the powerplant was in the car to drop the pan and do the final alignment on the forks and rods.

I have rebuilt several Ferrari GB's and I'm not a mechanic. The last 348 GB I did cost me 3 grand in parts. It is really easy to do. There is nothing to Ferrari GB's. Special tools are factory required but the whole deal can be done with home made tools and a good eyeball. Most of the cost is labor and mystic you pay for. There is alot of blue sky in most shops charge to you. Been there done that and lots of miles later. Don't be fooled the GB's aren't any harder than the engines.

Rob,
I've rebuilt a few ferrari transaxles, and recently completed a BB gearbox. With the engine alreay removed from the car, it's about an additional hour to separate the gearbox from the engine. Here's the breakdown on parts and labor:

As going through the gearbox on a BB, or any Ferrari is labor intensive...and requires great attetion to detail in terms of verifying clearances...any parts there were slightly suspect were replaced.

So, all syncros and sliders (except for 1st/RM)
All case bearings and gear needle roller bearings
Diff carrier bearings and races
Reverse idler shaft (common on BBs/TRs)
3rd gear (chipped and was crunchy during shifting)
Updated diff seals and new CV axle flange
Replace all bearings in the transfer case

Parts total: $4,000 including $700 for 3rd gear
Typically I pay 20-25% less than dealer retail.

Labor, not including engine removal time...about 40 hours...and I have all the Ferrari special toos needed for this job.

So, if you figure Ferrri dealer labor rate at $100/hr., this job, at retail would have been approximately $10,000.

No matter what type of Ferrari gearbox I've overhauled, the parts prices alone fall between $2500-$4500 dollars....

Definitely a misprint or an editor's mis-translation of the author's text -- perhaps they were trying to say something like an engine rebuild could run $15K-$20K retail, and if you include the gearbox work at the same time that might add ~$5K so the whole enchillda would be $20-$25K -- just a thought...

not sure how a rebuild costs 4-6k. A major with a few extras is 3-4. I would think a new trans could be had for less than 10k

Is there a misprint in the latest Forza buyer's guide on the Mondial? It says an engine rebuild is only $4-6k or so, but a transaxle is $20-25k?

Is that right? I would think a few bearings and other minor parts would make it so much cheaper than an engine out rebuild.
