Edward you are correct. I should have looked at the car first instead of getting too caught up in these manuals. Late last night went out with the old flashlight and I found out that in my car there was no sensor at the themostat housing just a plug. Guess there are some minor differences in some of these cars.
Thanks again for your help!

He sent you the correct part. According to the parts book, not all engines carried the sending unit next to the thermostat housing and it is located in the crossover pipe. You should be OK.

Edward, Got a question for you. Earlier today I had Lyle Tanner Enterprises(Ferrari Parts Exchange) fax me a picture of the engine from the 308 GTSI shop manual and they claim that the sender unit I need that is connected to the water temp gauge on the dash is on the cross-over pipe between the cylinder heads under the plenum of the motor. Marked as item 35 under water pump and pipings in the manual. They sent me out the part today. Is it the wrong part?? When I first called I asked the parts guy, who seemed very knowledgeable, if the part I needed was the one you described next to the thermostat housing, item 51 under water pump and pipings in the shop manual. He said "no" thats not for the water temp gauge. If he is wrong what sending unit am I getting? Thanks for your help!

The water temperature sender for the gauge is next to the thermostat housing. The switch in the bottom of the coolant tank is the switch for the fast idle valve and cold light on the dash.

The sensor in the expansion tank talks to the fuel injection system.

Peter I'm trying to find Kelly's thread and picture now. Thanks for the info. The item I'm refering to is not the temp switch on the front radiator that turns the fans on, but at the bottom of the expansion tank in the engine compartment. It looks a little like the switch in the front radiator but smaller what is it? I'll keep lookin for the picture.
Thanks

The item on the rad only turns the rad fans on at a determined temp. It has nothing to do with the temp gauge. That sensor is located (on older 308's like my GT4) under the cross-over pipe between the cylinder heads. Most recently, in a picture posted by Kelly Vince (sp?) elsewhere here in Tech Q&A, I see a sensor located right next to and underneath the thermostat housing... He has a GTSi, so its probably that. The sending units are usually the first items to go, before the gauge will go. Usually....

Can someone tell me where the sensor is located that measures water temperature? Is it that plug with the two wires at the base of my expansion tank? Do they ever go bad? The reason why I ask is that my water temperature gauge sometimes reads higher than what it really is. I checked this with a pyrometer. I have already replaced the gauge once and still sometimes get these false readings? I have a 1982 308 GTSI.
Thanks
