P.S. Larry: David Schirmer's GTB has those turned-down tailpipes (although they have been cleverly crafted to look like normal ones - that point directly back - you really can't tell until you lie down on the ground and see the cut-outs below). |

My 75 308 gt4 has all of the exhaust equipment that came on it. The air pumps fell off. Anyway, I would argue with anyone that the thermal reactor on our cars is immediately off the manifold. It is the exhaust pipes heavily insulated and then covered with aluminum sheet metal. That is what most thermal reactors were anyway. Just a way to keep the exhaust hot until the extra air combined with the unburned hc's to produce more heat. |

Last night's six pack may have vaporized some memory here, but I think the following names/places are correct: Mark Spencer at Veloce Speedesign in/near San Jose installed smog equipment on a 'GT4 that had it taken off. Passed emissions. He may have a lead on parts. |

Hey Peter Now that you mentioned it, the XR700 is what I have and they are emission legal as an upgrade. So I do not have any problems there. Right now, I am looking to have a Thermal reactor coming from a junk yard soon. I will put it on, pass smog, and take it off and save it for next time. We too can play that game. |

Mitch, I think the XR700's are emissions legal (C.A.R.B. approved???). |

I don't have the entire air injection system but I got an exemption for that because it is no longer available anywhere. The thermal reactor is NLA, but some bum out there is willing to fabricate one for $3000 so I did not get the exemption for that. The referee did see my electronic ignition, but he is OK with it because it runs better the points (which means I have no points whatsoever). He is a cool dude, just want to go by the book. Without the air injection rail, I have gross emission but ... what can I do? You can't get it, you can't get it ! |

I have a tubi and with pumps hooked up it passed. Don't tell the Gov. :-) I think not having a muffler therw him off most guys would not know what the hell they were looking at. I dont have the 2nd set of points either and they never checked. It was not on the books to look at. Rob |

I don't know much about emission stuff, but here goes. On the 75GT4, there is no catalytic converters. There is an air injection system, and a thermal reactor. The air injection system introduces extra air inside the exhaust for more complete burning. The thermal reactor provides a small compartment where the temperature is elevated so that even more combustion can take place with whatever HC and CO that has not been burnt already. It is my understanding that this thing blows up often and causes fires so it is often removed for safety reasons. But, in California, they don't care about that, they want it back in. |

forgive my ignorance, but what thermal reaction is taking place? What is inside this muffler? The converters are upstream of it. |

The state Referee was arguing with me as to what a thermal reactor should look like sitting on the outside of the muffler. But after much beating him over the head with the dealer produced diagram, he finally relented and said that if I get a muffler that looks like the one in the diagram, I'll pass. So off I go to look for the one that looks like a square box. Who cares if it works, as long as it looks square. Go figure. |

It basically *is* the muffler on a 'GT4. Weighs almost as much as the rest of the car. |

Mitchell -- here's a jpeg I picked up off e-bay for a '77 (but I can't recall whether for B, S, or 4). I emailed a slightly higher resolution to you -- good luck...

I failed the visual inspection for California smog test because I am missing a "thermal reactor" for my car, a 75 308GT4. What I have is a straight muffler. As I understand, the thermal reactor on this model is built right into the muffler as one combined big unit in a square box, and there is no stand alone thermal reactor like Porsche or BMW for example. Am I correct? A picture would help. If somebody has one that they are willing to part with, or know where I can find one for cheap (visual inspection, it does not even have to function all that well), please let me know. |
