that looks like a great project, I'm very envious. So it may cost a few more thousand bucks and a couple of years, what a vehicle at the end of it!

Dave,

The car is a two tone black / red. The clam shell and roof are red and the bottom parts are black. It has a non-op from the california dmv. $10 bucks a year.

Matt,
I noticed in your pictures 2 different color
cars.Is the motor and trans. in a red car?
Also is it registerd in California - not that
it matters for the price you paid but would
make the deal that much better.

A story like this sounds like the 250 GTO left in the barn on blocks all sealed and protected for 20 years sold for nothing after the husband dies and the widow doesn't know what its worth

Was this mechanic a fool and didn't realize what he had or not have the money for finish the restoration and sell it for a great profit or ?

Horsefly, I think what is generally considered to be a bad idea (I know I've done it), is to buy a car for $5000 below "market" that needs $5000 (or more) of work. But spending $10K on a boxer with a good engine... hell, the engine & trans alone are worth $20K.

At that price there is room to manuver. In most cases the initial investment does not justify the additional expenditures.

Got a call from the ferrari service manager and he said that the 512 is in the best shape he has seen (cosmetic aside), and that I got it for a steal @ 10,000. My buyers remorse is gone. I will start posting pictures of the car Monday with an update every so often. He guesstimated it would only take 6 month doing about 6 hours on the weekend. Allthe work is in the cabin. I made an appoint with their body shop to restore the paint next month. I am planning on driving it in.

I could be interested in bringing this to England and rebuildiing it. If you decide to sell it let me know and send me some pics, to [email protected] (i'd love to see these either way).

Good luck if you decide to do it yourself. It would be a difficult but fun project.

Matt,

Please don't let this car be parted out. Like others, I would gladly find a way to take it off your hands and (eventually) finish it.

Buzz me if you want to sell it. I know others can outbid me, but I can give it a nice home here in Texas

I have been shopping for a Daytona spider conversion, but I have always liked the 330.

i would love to see some pictures too..I just spent a fortune on parts and would love to have a parts car... let me know if you decide to get rid of it....I would consider buying it. Transporting to South Carolina would not be easy but not the end of the world. Keep me in mind if you decide to sell it.

I'm located in Arkansas. I think you landed a big fish! I ALMOST had a similar deal last year. A 308 had set outside for many years and was sold off in a divorce settlement. A guy that I know bought the car, but resold it before I knew about it. Gotta love those barn cars. I have tracked down many similar Corvette tales. I know of a 330GT sitting in a local garage that hasn't moved in the 15 years that I've known about it. How about some pictures, on board or e-mailed direct?

James, I'll take some pictures tomorrow and e-mail or post them.

Arlie, are you local to so cal?

Maybe on sat or sun we can all meet and drink beer in the garage and look at the 1000 little yellow ferrari parts boxes and fight about what we should do first.

It will live again. There is something cool about an all black 512bbi

James, why would anybody even remotely consider using a completely intact car as a source of parts? Especially considering that the car comes with NEW parts in the box? Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul! Sounds like you've got a great project Matt. Keep that car together with all its parts. Any classic car, Ferrari or otherwise, deserves to be restored, not carved up and split apart like a thanksgiving turkey. And if you don't build it, just e-mail me if you want to sell it. I like projects!

James,

Where in so cal are you? I live in Valenica, just north of LA.

I may take you up on the offer. I was sitting in my garage looking at it wondering how long will this take. It is all black. I would hate to see a f car parted out, there are not that many still running and being driven. I love the sound of that motor. My wife thinks I am crazy.

He got the car after a former customer left it at his shop for sometime and the died. Readers digest version.

Customer buys car. Drives car 20,000 miles. Lets sit for 10 years.... outside.

heat, kids, dogs, birds, cats and parts thiefs help themselves.

Takes car to shop for a restoration.

guy rebuilts engine, trans, suspension, electrical. during that time, guy dies. estate leaves car to cover cost of the repairs to date....$10,000.

Guy wants car out of the shop. sell me the car for $10,000. Great deal...I think. Don't quote me on this in a year.

Car drives, and sounds, like a dream for as long as I can say on the box.

Matt - if you decide not to pursue this life-encompassing project, I will give you 50% profit for your off-shore reef. I could use it for a parts car.

Your best bet is to get your hands on copies of the W.S.M. and especially the P.C. (you'll need to refer to that to find the numbers of the missing pieces). I know of no online manuals or books, you'll have to get the hard copies.

Good luck. I guess there still are Ferraris-in-barns out there. I won't ask how a Ferrari mechanic could let such a car go to waste cosmetically. I'm sure its a long story...

I bought a 512 bbi today from a former ferrari mechanic for $10,000. Engine and trans are perfect and run smooth. it has a fresh service...but....the exterior is dirty and missing a lot of parts (lights) and the enterior is a woodenbox and a portable am radio for a stereo. He sold me his parts (everything new in a box) but I need to assemble it. I am guessing it would take about a year to rebuild the car. Are there any online resouces or books on the 512? I need to reassemble everything except the mechanics.
