I swapped another 30 amp relay for the fuel pump relay and it didn't start. I cannot hear the fuel pump, but I never have since I owned the car. Here's the kicker... I sprayed starting fluid directly into the air cleaner box twice, and it didn't start. Maybe theres no spark?? Any ideas on how to test ??

When I first got my 308 that yellow fan light tricked me too. I called my mechanic and he told me my fan was on. Man I was embarrassed and relieved and the same time.

This may sound weird, but Brian, with your fuel injected 308, you just jump in and turn the key and start it immediately (like any other fuel injected car)? With my older carb car, I have to let the fuel pump run for about 20 sec. (on the first position of the ignition key) to fill up the float bowls, then I start the engine. The fuel pump on my car (a BDS I believe?) is LOUD, if anything fails and doesn't run, I know it wouldn't work. Can you hear the fuel pump running on your car (before and after this event)?

Try using a commerially available "starting fluid" (Ether) areosol spray instead of handling raw fuel, to shoot into the air box. This is a bit more safe and won't cost alot to try. If you get it started using this method you know it's a fuel related (maybe not enough pressure upon start) issuse, not spark. If it thinks about starting then dies out you may have a bad fuel pump entirely (or relay), the engine will run breifly on the ether. Hope this helps.

Stu: There was no indication of a problem. It just didn't start one day. It's an 83 308 GTSi QV with 26 clicks. A Beauty !!
Bret: thanks for the help !!! I'll be getting on it tomorrow. I just can't bear the thought of turning the love of my life over to inexperienced mechanics (when I first got the car, a yellow warning light in the upper right hand side of the instrument cluster kept coming on. The manual says it's a fan warning light. Well is it a radiator fan light? No, it's a "HEATER FAN IS ON" indicator light. THEY didn't know, and charged me a hundred bucks to tell me so. I did get a full refund from a very embarassed service dept.)you know?

Brian,
Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, but I am curious as to what year and model you have? Also, did you have ANY kind of indication there was a possible problem? I'll hope for a quick solution for you!

You can test if the fuel pump is working by seeing if any gas is being delivered to the engine. You could smell it if you were flooding it. Take the relay from the start valve and put it in the fuel pump relay spot. You should hear the fuel pump run continuously. Try and start it, it should fire up and then die. If this happens it is probably the fuel pump relay. You can also take off that big black hose that goes from the airbox to the plenum and spray some gas in there while you turn it over to see if it is an ignition problem or a fuel delivery problem (if it fires up while you spray it is a fuel delivery problem).

Everything was fine until yesterday... The engine turns over and the battery is charged. I suspect the fuel pump. The fuse for the fuel pump looks ok (do you test these with a continuity tester??) and the relay for the fuel pump clicks when the ignition is turned on and off. I assume this means it's working? Is there any way to test the relay or the fuel pump ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
