I would like to see someone try and steal my car. I can barely get the thing started on a hot day and I have the key. I'd get a kick out of watching someone try to hotwire the thing. I gotta figure out what the deal is with leaving it in the sun and it giving me attitude when I go to start it. An alarm is mostly useful so that you can have keyless entry. It's not very hard at all to steal a car, they're just gonna put it in the back of a truck and driveaway. Then it'll be sold in South America or some other underdeveloped area. |

Security systems are a bigger pain in the butt for the owner than the crook. The alarms go off all night, cause no-starts due to the deterent malfunction, and end up being disconnected for another fee. People don't even pay attention when those things go off. Buy you some insurance and if your car is stolen, you get another car. If someone really wants it, they will get it. |

Be careful with the proximity warning alarms. Some drunken idiot who decides to take a look might get pissed when the car gives him a warning. He doesn't want to steal the car, but a key can do some expensive damage to your paint in a few seconds. Happened to a neighbor of mine with a M-B CLK. |

I agree with niles, my plan is I have a full value policy and my philosophy is ...let them take it (plessse)and I will then use the proceeds to upgrade to a 355. but I doubt theft is a big a problem on a ferrari (too noticable and low street demand for parts) theft for joy rides and tefts of current models 360, maranello etc for export are probably a real problem. |

I recently installed a Clifford 8000 on my Mondial as required by my insurer. This model has a proximity sensor if you like to leave your car open with the roof out. It has a lot of options (unlocks doors, rolls-up windows, opens trunk, turns on various lights, disables ignition and fuel pump), some of which I didn't connect. Cost was $650 installed and took two days. Highly recommend professional installation! |

The other option is to spend 500 or less on a simple alarm system and the rest on a full value insurance policy. None of the above saves you from the guy who realy wants your car and will simply come and tow it away in 30 seconds. |

Yoshi, I have tried to start this thread earlier with little reaction, hope you fare better, Here are my thoughts: 1) the shift vault looks good (though way over priced for a small piece of aluminum an d a lock cylinder - you could make this yourself for about $12) but is worthless as a security device, since it relies on the strength of the shift gate itself which is simply screwed in to the console and the whole business could easily be pried up off the console and the car shifted freely...I thought about bolting the gate into the console to make the shift gate concept work but the console would have to be strengthened and I could not find the right looking chrome bolts for the shift gate. 2) given Ferrari wiring etc. my mechanic warns me against complicated electronic ssytems that would make trouble shooting problems harder for him...a simple kill switch is problably the way to go 3) I have done the following: I cut down the shifter close to the gate so that the upper half is removable and replacable with a "collar" that interconnect the top/bottom halves so there is no shifter in the car! 4) I am investigating a removable sterring wheel mechanism now so that I could park the car and then remove the wheel and the shifter for total security -- race car applications have these and should be ez to find for a momo. Since we have targas, poping the top would be ez but believe it or not Yoshi, they just smash the window and they are in... the door glass is very ez to break for them and it wa a royal pain for me to find and replace. That would mean I would have to consider a complex eelctronic ssytem that would introduce gremlins into my Ferrari ( every such system I ever had acted up!) Or.. Leave the pit bull in the car when you park or sleep in the car with a shotgun that always works here in NY since they will then jsut steal your gun and leave you car alone. |

My 85 308 GTSi QV does not have the auto security system installed. Can anyone recommend the best (hope economical) security system in after market? How about the Shift Gate Vault? Does it really work well against any theft? Has anyone used it? Thanks!! |
