Thanks Ric: I will install the gaskets tomorrow. Wish me luck. I can assume that gasket sealer is to be used only at the ends of each gasket, and NOT along the entire lenght......is this correct? |

You have to trim the valve cover gaskets to fit. It's really hard to do on the car. I "rough-cut" the pieces apart (somewhere on the gasket where the that part won't be used) and then "eyeball" trim each part to fit. I use a very thin film of ThreeBond 1211 at critical junctions. |

Thanks Ric: I am only removing the 7-12 bank. It is already off......tricky, until I found the 18th nut!!!! I removed the distributor cap, base, vacuum pump, and the elbow for the exhaust gasses. I received the parts today, together with some paint for the valve cover, from the dealer. The gaskets have the center "sealer ring" within them.....should I also use gasket sealer? I know I will have to use it where the gaskets come to an end. I will leave the square o-rings alone....they seem fine. Is there any trick to installing the main gaskets. They come in the package as "one" complete gasket. My plan is to install it that way, then cut off the extra pieces, where the covers end. |

You have to remove the distributor caps, distributor bases, the vacuum pump (7-12 side) and the little cover (1-6 side). Be careful not to break the wire guides when removing the cover, as they tend to bang into the diagonal frame rails that are adjacent to each cover. Due to the "vertical" nature of the covers, be prepared for some oil to run out once the covers seperate. Cover the floors below!

Stanley: Thanks for your reply. I am working on it right now.....removed 17 small nuts and 10 washers......the seven washers in the recessed areas will have to wait till the cover comes off....I hope they stay with the cover. Must I also unbolt the distributor cap.....or do I have to remove the whole thing? What about the vacuum pump on the back of the exhaust cam.....must it also be removed? Thanks. |

It is not a complicated task to replace valve cover or gasket. There are a lot of little nuts with small I believe brass flat washers. Just collect them all. You can buy the VC gaskets from a ferrari dealer it is very inexpensive. I think they also recommed using a thin layer of red sealer which they will probably supply you. I think I did distributer seals at the same time. It will take you a little bit of time only because you want to be neat and you have not done it before. It was no more complicated then change on an old chevy. Besides its fun to get your hands into the real workings of a car you love.... I had an 87 TR and the VC gasket was leaking. I replaced and problem went away. |

A previous seepage has turned into a leak. The left valve cover leaks on the bottom.....the frame rail, that runs parallel to and beneath, is wet along it's length. My concern is whether the leak could be from the left exhaust cam seal (this would require the engine out of the car). From the bottom, the leak is seen along the bottom of the whole valve cover but worse in front, however, looking from the top, the side and top of the cam seal area are dry.......I would expect oil to be seen from the top, if it was the cam seal, due to the rotation, and flying oil. Since this is not so, them I am assuming that it is only the valve cover gasket. Does this make sense? How difficult is it to replace the valve cover gasket, with the engine in the car? |
