And I thought the Italian electronics were the sensitive ones. Looks like zee Germans keep an even closer tab on what's going on in the engine bay.
My tech was the one that told me that unplugging the noisy pump would cause the MIL to come on. But it could have been a ploy to just get me to buy the expensive pump.
Thanks for the input.

Joe: Thanks for the feedback. My air pump makes noise too. Since mine wasn't effectively plugged in (ie blown fuse) it wasn't doing anything either, and it didn't set the MIL light off. In fact I'd recently interogated the OBD 11 for 'pending faults' and found nothing. I can only assume that it's not that critical. To my knowledge, this pump runs at cold start to make the unburnt HC's oxegenate/burn to meet the smog numbers during warm-up. And the OBD 11 looks for an onging condition before it goes off ( lights the MIL). I can add that in my Porsche, the MIL light will go off if the air pump stops....FYI.

Mike, interesting you should mention the airpump being noisy. Mine was noisy also, and I took it apart to find out why (a new one is around $700).
Once apart, I found the impeller so deteriorated that it was making this horrible noise. I put the pump back together without the impeller as it couldn't have been doing much good in the condition it was in. It defeats the purpose of the airpump, but I didn't want to alarm the OBDII, just in case. Needless to say the noise was gone.

THE ANSWER: (hope it helps one of you)
The airbag system is electrically powered in isolation from the battery and battery cutoff switch. This is so that should an accident occur cutting the battery, then the airbags can still deploy.

However, when that occurs a fault is recorded and the dash light goes on. This same set of conditions occurs when the ignition key is 'On' and the battery cutoff switch is used to isolate the battery. Same can occur if you leave the key 'On' and let the battery charge go down.

Bottom Line; turn your key 'Off' before you cutoff your battery.

Even though the Workshop Manual says/shows that you can reset the airbag controller from the test plug by grounding Pin 1 for 5 to 10 seconds, it doesn't work, and in fact there is no wire at Pin 1 as shown. The local dealers mechanic (Eric at the Auto Gallery in Woodland hills, CA )immediately knew what I'd done and said he thought the manual was referring to European models. He kindly reset the system with the Factory "SD-1" tester free of charge.

Joe:
Thanks for the reply;
Condition upon lamp lighting was that I was removing an old cell phone installation and got into a birds nest of poor aftermarket wiring. Blew the radio fuse...seemingly having nothing to do with the Air bags. I checked all the airbag connections twice and it doesn't seem that I've accedently opened the circuits. Checked all other fuses and found the air pump fuse blown too...the pump seems noisy and it is likely pulling down high current, again not to do with the airbags....I don't think ???

Faulty airbag ECU's are not unheard of on the 355. Usually due to jump starting the car when the battery is dead.
I had an issue arise because someone attempted to start the car on a weak battery. This will also set a code, but fortunately it was cleared without any damage to the ECU.
As far as I know the only way to reset the lamp is with the SD-1 or SD-2.
What was the condition in which your lamp came on?

Mine has been on for 1year. The dealer has not been able to solve it. I took the air bag out and put a Momo wheel in its place and the light stays on. When I have time, I am going to disconnect the light

It's on, and short of having the "SD-1" tester I'm lost. Any suggestions? Is there a fuse or relay ? The manual discribes shorting test plug pin 1 to ground to clear the faults, but it had no effect.
Thanks all in advance, Mike.
