I agree with Charles. I cleaned the old grease out of the motor gearbox, siliconed the window tracks and the windows have worked fine since. Make sure everything works before the door panel goes back on. This includes all door handles and the power locks.

I tried the new more powerful motors in my car and they were worse than the originals.

There are many variables to this problem. By just making a blanket statement "do this and your problem is solved" is not at all descriptive enough. One thing that you will need to do (besides what was mentioned) is to check the voltage on your switch. Pull the switch out of it's socket making sure to not let any wires come off and put a voltmeter on the contacts. I forget which are which but you will easily find out by putting the probe on different contacts until you get a reading. Check it with no load on and then when it is going down and when it is going up (these will be different posts of course). If you are getting less than about 10-10.5 volts when you are going up, then you have a major power loss that must be traced down. It could be the switch, the wires, a wire connection, a drag on the cable, a mis-alligned window, etc. You want to allign the window until it rests all the way down with no glass showing....just kidding. Good luck.

the old motors are fine on most of these cars... the only problem is that the grease in the motor gearbox turns into a hard glue after a few years---if you remove the motor and pic out the "glue" and relube--they work like a charm.

Bill my car started doing the same thing a few months ago. I just bought some of the new stronger window motors, and plan on going through everything top to bottom.

There is a connector under the dash on each corner that connects the door harness to the main body harness that is notorious for a bad connection that can cause your symptoms.

That is the circuit breaker shutting the motor off. It is getting too much resistance trying to raise the window. Try this: Spray some silicone down the window felts on each end and see if this helps. If it does, you may need to clean and lube the various cables and pulleys, to help free things up.

Well, I haven't touched my window yet and, low and behold, it got worse. Now, it stops dead when attempting to put it up and i can hear a slight click when I engage the switch. I can tug the window up by hand ( with great effort) while engaging the switch, but it will not move at all on its own. I should note that it goes down rapidly and smoothly. I thought that the switch itself might be at fault, but I reversed the driver and passenger side switches and it did not change anything. Does this add any relavant info to the diagnosis of this problem? Prior to this, it did go up, albeit very, very slowly--now, a dead stop .

Bill V. -
re:"My Q's are:..."
There's a detaled procedur in the following thread:

http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/114996.html?1030729555

Gunk is fine, Citrus Solvent is better.
Don't spray, get a tube of lithium grease from any auto parts or HW store. The spray is too fluid. Do NOT use wheel bearing or CV joint grease, it's too thick almost as bad as the dried out stuff(don't ask).

I have new motors in my '82 GTSi, but were still very slow. This weekend I cleaned the switches and applied Stabilant 22 to them. My windows are now as fast as any car I have been in....

I'm about to tackle my very, very slow driver side window on my '85 308. So far, I've cleaned the console switch connections with electrical contact cleaner--with no change noted. I'm aware from previous threads that the next step is to clean out the orignal grease from the pulleys and to relubricate.

My Q's are: should I use a solvent to clean out the old grease, such as Gunk, or will this cause other problems? Secondly, I planned on spraying with lithium grease--is that an acceptable substitute? Is there anything I should be careful of in removing the door panel, mirror switch , lock cover, etc?
