One thing to watch for is oil dripping on the alternator. The most likely source is the valve cover gasket but also check the exhaust cam oil seal. Oil ingested by the alternator will do damage. |

a bad alt may still read 13+ volts, you need to test for amperage. Take your Ferrari to any main stream auto parts store and they will test it for free. You may have to put a good battery in first, and make sure you feel out the person doing the test so that they tell you the right stuff. Don't worry about them hurting your car. The machine that they use will not in any way damage your electrical system. if amps and volts are good then your set.

Paul -- another place to look for comparison/info is: http://www.transpo.de/Catalog/Browse.htm select "Regulator" and "Bosch" |

No smoke coming from the alt area on my car. As for the part #, I just brought the old regulator in to the local parts store and they gave me an aftermarket one. Just recently, Steve Magnusson posted here a parts supply website for bosch products, you can check there first: http://www.importeccatalog.com/ |

haven't put a new battery in yet...was a little concerned about the smoke from the alternator area...did your Volt Reg smoke up before crapping out? On my old Audi...the Alternator would bounce all over the place 13.5 to 7 then back to 13.5 then to 5...this one hasn't done that. Did you replace with a bosch voltage regulator...what's the part number?

So you've got a new battery in there now and it still craps out? The regulator is located on the back of the alternator and that piece can be changed while still in the car. Its not that expensive either. However, to check diodes, the alt. needs to be taken apart and so it should be taken out of the car. Try the reg. first and see if it does the same things (It seems to be that its the weakest item. I've replaced mine three times. I haven't had problems yet - knock on wood)... |

308 battery died over the weekend...was only 3 years old (60 month)...we jumped the car and the car started right up..just wouldn't hold a charge...the car did some weird stuff the weekend before...some smoke came up from the area of the alternator but went away and the car ran fine. Later that afternoon the engine lost power all of a sudden and I immediately shut it down...upon start up it was again firing on all cylinders. I suspect that my alternator/voltage regulator is shot too or was the initial cause of the battery failure...the multimeter showed that it was putting 13.9 back to the battery at the time of the test...but it could be sporatic ..can anyone recommend a good rebuilder...is it just a matter of changing the voltage regulator and diodes? |
