Henry; Can you contact me on your steering rack thread. I have an 86 tr and installed a rebuilt unit and have a question on final tolerances. I was hoping you may have some info. Thanks. Brad

I apply small amounts at the end, and "wet" the gaskets with it along the entire length with a paper thin coating spread by using my thumb and forefinger to slide it on. Is that a run-on sentance or what? |

There are some bushings that the tie rod attaches to up in the rack. These bushings are known to wear out (on 308's anyway). They're made from some kind of Bakelite material. One of the rebuild shops I heard about uses brass replacements. I seems that Superformance in the UK sells rebuilt racks or rebuilds them for a reasonable amount. Last time I had a rack rebuilt, I took it to Norwoods (972-831-8111) and they sub'd it out for $250-ish my cost. Ask for James. |

Thanks Ed: Here I removed the air cleaner assembly to get at the engine throttle linkages, and forgot about the butterfly. Now that everything is back together again, I think it will have to wait till winter. As you read, I will be removing the steering rack. This, I believe, will expose the rest of the throttle linkage at the pedal. I will lube these. If it doesn't work, then you will certainly be correct. Can I just spray some carb cleaner in the intake, after the air cleaner, while the engine is running, and cross my fingers? |

Most of the time a sticking throttle when first opened is caused by carbon accumulated around the throttle butterfly. Some spray carb cleaner and a toothbrush will clean it out. Use your wifes brush. |

Thanks Ric: Moving the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock produces no movement at all. The rotors turn freely with no hang-up......I will assume the bearings are fine. At 3-9 o'clock, the rack shafts move.....no movement of the tie rods, and no movement of the steering wheel.....when one wheel is moved, the other one turns also, by itself. Forced movement results in a sharp stop in both directions. I will assume that it is excess play in the rack and pinion gears. This is a condition that was very slow in coming on.....not at once. The WSM shows two adjustments that can be made......dealer states (over phone) that there is too much play. Where can I have it rebuilt? Do I need to take apart the trunk in order to remove the steering rack? BTW: Where do I lube the throttle linkage.....it sticks a little when first pressed down. The throttle pedal only exposes a small portion of the linkage. I have already lubed all the linkages at the engine......they where fine. Thanks again. |

First, make sure the slack is not in the bearings. Grip the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and check for slack. Then do the 3 and 9 o'clock test with someone holding the steering wheel firm. If the slack is in the rack, it's typically in the tie-rod ends (replace) or in the outer steering rack bushings (rebuild). It's a metric TRW rack and can be rebuilt for $250-$300ish. Maybe cheaper, who knows. |

Has anyone performed the adjustment, as described in the WSM? I have an oscillation in the steering wheel, at times, at speed. With the car off the ground, I can move the wheels about 1/2 inch when in the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. I belive my options are: adjust, rebuild, buy new. Has anyone ever taken the steering rack out of a TR? Thanks.
