Sal,

Your car does not have cats ('77s did not). When I looked at your car at Lime Rock, the exhaust did not appear to be the original, but double-check - so you may not have to replace anything at all exhaust-related.

FYI, regardless of whether or not your state requires emission test/inspections, it is a violation of Federal law to tamper with, remove or modify any part of the emission system that came on an automobile or was added to a gray market car to have it EPA/DOT certified. While its not likely that the Federales will catch you, it they do, you will be considered in violation and subject to a high fine and possible vehicle confiscation.

You can finish the job by removing the rest of the emission system:

1. Air injection rails and plug up the holes with plugs or bolts, or allen head bolts.
2. Diverter valves
3. Brackets for airpumps

I would leave the Carbon canister and the plumbing to the intake manifold to safely vent the gas tanks.

The advantages are your engine compartment will look less cluttered. You will have no gain in power because your air pumps were removed in the first place.

Lastly, you can replace the thermal reactor / muffler with a straight Euro style muffler (or an Ansa) and you will run cooler, safer, and with more horse power due to less restriction, and more performance due to less weight.

Wish you could send me your thermal reactor ... I need it to pass smog here in California.

replace the cat converters with 'test' pipes, K&N air filter and maybe Nick's Krank Vent system (did all on my 82 GTSi - but will have to replace it for my every-other year smog test).

My 308 is not registered as historic and no longer needs to be tested for emission.

The air pumps were given to me in a box when I bought the car, but can I now take off part of the exhaust.... what are the advantages/disadvantages

Is there anything else that I can do
