on my 84 308 the problem was with the ignition module. i switched the harness on the two modules and the speedometer started working.

This shows the importance of getting and keeping good records with the car. If you have a complete set of service records or registration/non-registration cards, you will get an indication of the accuracy of the mileage. A good look at the wear indicators (pedals, etc.) on the car and if they match the alleged mileage will take a little of the guesswork out. As the other guys say, how the car goes mechanically will be the big indicator. A high mileage car that has been taken care of will be better than a low mileage neglected car. Of course, a well cared for low mileage car is a pretty nice thing to find.

I knew right from day one that the mileage was bogus because I saw that the speedo wasn't working. I cleaned up the sending unit and after that it worked every time. This problem and many others gave me the chance to knock $5G off the price J

Cmon guys, you can't stereotype every situation. Sometimes there is proof of mileage. If you doubt the validty of the mileage then do what Mike said and go with how the car feels and how it is mechanically. I'll bet that there isn't one person here who if he was going to sell his car would tell the buyer that he didn't think the mileage was correct. I think that guy would be a fool. When in doubt go with your best instincts.

I agree with Herbert. Personally, I did not even believe the 12,000 miles on my TR when I bought it. Just doesn't make sense to me. That was an average of 1350 miles a year. Yeah, right?! It just seems that the fleet for sale keeps the same mileage. Suspicious .... 0r is it that no one sells actively after 30,000 miles on the odometer.

My main concern was how it ran mechanically and the soundness of the frame. You can always rebuild a great engine and car but it may be hard to produce a geat engine/car from a dog.

If ANYONE buys a low mileage 25 year old car, and believes what the odometer says, is the fool.

Dr T.
I agree with you completely. I was on the buying end of one of those "low mileage" cars. I was told my car had only 24K original miles and when I drove it the speedo/odom was working fine. But low and behold, the day after I bought it the speedo quit! I don't believe for a minute it was a coincidence. I'm sure the speedo was working only intermittently for quite a while. Did the dealer know it? Obviously I can't prove it but at this point it doesn't matter - I love my car. However, new buyers - beware!

Greg,
First thing is to tell as few people that your speedometer doesn't work as possible. Don't fool with the speedometer at all. It almost always is the sending unit behind the right rear tire. You can unscrew it yourself in your driveway and replace it in 15 min.
It's the simplicity of this hook up that makes me wonder about all those "low milage" 308's out there.

Charles,I think I am correct when I say that the speedometer and the odometer on your car are both hooked into the same circuit within the speedometer. This is the way it is on the older 308s. So if the speedometer works and the odometer doesn't, you probably have a defective odometer.

I have a little different problem, my speedo works fine, but the odometer stops and starts working intermitently. I'll stop when I hit a bump and then start again when I hit the next bump. Any ideas? Could this be the sending unit too? Or perhaps and electrical connection? ('84 Mondial Cab.) Charles

I also have the same problem with my speedo on my 84 308. When I was driving from Midland, Texas, to Chicago, the speedo went out in Oklahoma. When I got to Chicago, and being parked for 2 weeks, the darn thing worked again. When I brought it in for service, I mention I had problems with the speedo and they took it out and sent it to a shop to have it tested. It came back with no problem found. So maybe my problem is also in the sending unit. Sure is nice to have this website with all that knowledge out there.

These are pictures I took of my unit which I sent to Stu, hope this may help you Greg with locating the unit and checking it/cleaning it/replacing it.

I had the same problem....I replaced my speedometer, thinking that was the fix, but after a few hundred bucks later it still would work and then not work and so on... Turns out replacing the sending unit was the fix ("Peter" on this site was VERY helpful!). As Magoo states, in some cases just a cleaning of the unit will do - making sure wires have a good connection. If you search the archives, you'll find more helpful info on this common problem. Good luck.

Another thought is the sending unit located behind the Rt. rear wheel just in front of the axle boot. It will have wires coming out of it in a white harness sheath. The connection may be loose or the sending unit may be bad.

First, check the wire harness connectors under the dash area. On the earlier 308 GTS the connector is a white one located just under the ignition switch.Pull the connector apart and check for loose or corroded contacts. MAGOO

The speedometer on my 1980 308 GTSi works when I hit a bump and then quits working until another bump.

Anyone have a fix?
