James, I dont know if this is applicable to your situation, but with my 75 308, I was advised to always replace the little o-ring on the distributor where it fits into the camshaft whenever the distibutor reinstalled. Tim |

Oil leaks in this area can come from two places: 1. The lip seal behind the rotor 2. The face seal between the distributor housing and the head. Usually if #2 leaks, the oil doesn't get inside the cap but runs out the back of the distributor housing and down the outside of the cap and wires. If the lip seal(#1) leaks, this would be directly inside your distributor. I just resealed my distributor housing and replaced the lip seal also. This is a hour and a half job with the right tools and does not require cam seal replacement. 1.Remove the rotor first(note the position) 2. The three holddown nuts/screws each have a washer behind them. Remove them.. 3. Carefully remove the distributor housing. I tapped the reinforced edges with a plastic mallet to break the gasket free. 4. Slide off the housing with the lip seal 5. Remove lip seal - knock it out carefully from behind. 6. Replace the lip seal- use a guide to be sure it's square & flush. 7. I used high temp gasket compound on the distributor housing gasket surface. 8. slide back over the distributor shaft using care .(the replacements are usually double lips and very hard to get on without a guide of some kind. Not being careful with this will cause seal damage and/or the lip spring to pop out!) 9. Reattach the rest of the parts... |

When I was installing new wires on my 84 308, I found about a teaspoon of oil in my forward distributor cap. Does this mean the seal at the cam is bad? Do I have to remove the cam to change this seal or can I take the three bolts off the front, remove the plate which the dist. cap bolts to, and replace the seal. Or can the oil leak be from one of the 3 bolts(actually 2 nuts and one bolt) holding this plate. I took the bottom one out and looked for a washer or seal but there wasn't one. Are there suppose to be one there. |
