Rebuilt booster. Same thing.Talked to some other owners say its normal with 400. Thinking about setting my idle up a little.Seems to only happen at or below 1000 rpm. Hey I need a new drivers side front lens. The amber is all gone on mine and it has a slight crack.Know of any anywhere??? |

I looked at a friends 400i and it seems the same. My only thought is that the vacuum take off on my car is on teh lower left of the servo when looking at it when standing in front of the car - the pipes run up over the inner wings and down onto the servo. It may be different on yours becuase your car is left-hand drive and the vacuum would logically be on the lower right of the servo BUT the master cylinder is held on by 4 bolts so you could undo these, rotate the master cylinder 90 degrees and refit the master cylinder, if you see what I mean. This will move the vacuum take off from lower left to lower right. Alternatively you could just fit longer vacuum pipes or you may even have enough slack to fit anyway. If you want this send me the money plus shipping (which at a guess will be around $75) and I'll send it to you. If it is wrong send it back and I will refund the $250. That way you will just loose out on the shipping costs, but I am 95% certain it will fit OK. Simon |

I think the brake warning light problem may be a standard problem. Firstly I should say my brakes are working fine but my warning light flashes sometimes. I put a new servo/master cylinder on about 1000 miles ago. After I did this my brakes worked fine (the old servo was broken) but the warning light flashed every now and again. It is operated by a vaccuum switch on the servo (the bit with the yellow plastic covering) I thought the new servo was leaking but as I had spent over year (but only 400 miles) living with this problem I could not return teh new servo as it was out of warranty, so I bought a second new servo and fitted it. The brake light still flashed every now and again. I bought a new vacuum switch which took 3 months to arrive. When I fitted it the brake light still flashed. The vacuum that is used by the servo is created by two sources - 1) The engine intake manifold and 2) a mechanical vacuum pump driven off of the front of the right-hand inlet camshaft. I checked my pump over and it is fine. I gave up. As I said my brakes are fine. Maybe the carbs need tuning to give more engine vacuum. I have tried to tune my carbs and tehy are about 85% correct now, just slightly lumpy at tickover. I will have an expert give tehm a proffesssional tune-up as soon as I have changed my timing chain (which I want to do as a precautionary measure as it is 59,000 miles old). BUT if you want a new servo I have one here that has only been used for 400 miles and is as new. See the attached pictures. Price new is around $500, I'll take around $250 plus shipping. I even have the invoice from Ferrari UK when I bought it.

Bruno -- IMO these are the best type of exhaust manifold nuts to prevent loosening: http://www.metricfasteners.com/detail.asp?id=72130 They do lose a little of their "locking" ability with reuse and/or elevated temperature, but they are quasi-reusable (especially if you recrimp the slot closed as Simon described).

I can find these for you but any specialist can rebuild teh alternator for you. I paid around $150 for rebuild here in the UK about three months ago. The exhaust nuts should have the cracks. They saw though the body and hit the top of the nut so that the gap in the cut closes up and hold the nut tight when you tighten the nut on the stud. |

Well my exhaust leak cam backI called Ferrari and they werent sure what nuts went on car.I took a 12mm nut off of my 308 exhaust flange at cat and tried it.It fit well so I got more and used them. The problem is corrected. The acorn nuts as I described them were open on the top so they didnt bottom out. However the "ring" between the dome and hex was cracked a little on all of them(or thats the way they are). For whatever reason they loosen up by themselves. The nuts off the 308 also have the washer attached to the bottom to spread the torque.I am happy.Hard to believe dealer didnt figure this out after 3 visits.and $500.00.

Yes #21557 is my car :-)) As you will have seen I have done _a lot_ of work on it. I buy my fateners from Namrick Limited (in the UK). They may be too expensive to buy here and ship to the US but their website has little drawings of the nuts and bolts. It's worth a look as what we do in the UK is a lot closer to the Italians than you are in the US. To see a 'dome' nut (the one you do _not_ want to be using) have a look at http://www.namrick.co.uk/browse.asp?PCID=4 and scroll to the bottom of the page. They carry most of their stock in metric sizes even if they do not show up on the site - I usually send them a sample and they match it for me but this might not work for you. The only nut they have not been able to match are th ones on the cam covers. They have stainless ones that are similar but different enough to be wrong. I found them in the US for $4+ each plus shipping (their are over 40 of them). I checked with Ferrari who had them for just over $1.20. Just shows you should always ask your local dealer. I have seen this numerous times on many different parts, even expensive ones.

Yes your boxes are different. Is that your car.Nice. The leak is gone and I've been hearing that from alot of people about the nuts. What was original? The nuts on there now are copper shaped acorns. Thinking about tracking down some metric nuts in stainless and putting them on.Will get one off and post pic. |

Hi Bruno I think my airboxes (400) are different to yours (400i). Mine have a 'funnel' that just points forward as part of the metal airbox. See http://www.400register.com/graphics/21557/concours12-0602.jpg I was also going to suggest that you should not have what we in the UK call 'dome' nuts on your exhaust. Dome nuts are like the cam cover nuts and may bottom out on the studs. As you seem to have stopped the leaks then maybe you have sorted it out. Simon |

The cars are v-12 sleepers at ridicoulous prices.20k does a nice one right now. They drive great. The maintenance is easier than a 308.and you use less parts.oh my headers have been driven 100 miles now with no leaks.knock on wood.will consider acorn nut rplacement next time.if there is a next time. |

Bruno, acorn nuts may be your problem. Often they will bottom out on the stud before sufficant pressure is exerted on the manifold/gasket. Over the years washers may have been lost, the manifold may have been milled down or the gaskets may be thinner than the originals, all things that reduce the "stack height" which is critical when using acorn nuts. Try screwing a nut on to a stud (no manifold/gasket/washers) until it bottoms out then measure the remaining distance to the head. This should be less than the thickness of the manifold/gasket/washer combination. If not then you will have to add washers to to build up your "stack" or use conventional nuts. BTW, I saw a nice 400GT (dark blue/cream) at the FCA "Gathering" at Indy last weekend and now I have started to look at them with some interest. The car sounded absolutely fabulous when he motored off. |

Simon,Can u get me apick of where the 2 air inlet hoses attach at the front behind the grille. The other end goes to the airbox where the filter is.I need to see how they attach behind the grille. Oh had my heads machined and reinstalled with original copper gaskets and nuts.OK.so far no leaks. |

When I put mine on I tightened the nuts up really tight by feel. I used new gaskets but without any sealer - just put them on dry. One question though - what type of nuts are you using? My car had a mixture of steel ones and copper ones. I bought new 'shakeproof' copper ones and fitted these, with the exception of one stud at the front lower pipe which needs a half-height nut on it, and I had two of those from the originals. I've had no leaks in the past 500 miles but next time I have the air-filter boxes off or I am under the car I will re-tighten these nuts. Good luck with it. Simon |

Simon.I got the drivers side of.Figured out the hard way you have to drop whole system to pull it back to get the headers of the studs. My question is 1-you cant get in to tourque up the bolts so I guess feel only.2nd. These things have leaked at the heads 2 times now since 2000.This is the first time I did it.It was done 1x by Fcar dealer and 1x by nobody garage. Is there any secerets. The headers were resurfaced in 2000. The last guy put red permatex on also.I think thats insane.Any suggestions appreciated.I hate bolting this puppy all up and hearing a leak and having to do it all over.I am doing it in my driveway with no lift.OUCH.New gaskets will arrive UPS today from FAF. Ever have a leak problem? Rain tomorrow nite.Gotta get done. |

I have changed my manifolds and hence the exhaust gaskets. It's a reasopnably difficult job on a 400 but I understand teh 400i is a little easier. Did you want a blow-by-blow account of how to do it. |

Simon, I have not had a chance to actually pull the seats out yet but I have found the nuts as you described. Thanks for the help. I agree that the charcoal canister was probably added by the federalizer. The install looks awfully "cobby" for a factory install, even by Ferrari standards. But not knowing when you folks in Europe started requiring evap controls I thought I would at least check. Bruno, I would guess your car must have a canister somewhere. Evap control would have been required to get the EPA/DOT papers. Amerispec had/has a reputation for doing very good work, so I doubt it was skipped. My canister is mounted in the trunk. This is a little unusual since most cars mount them in the engine bay. It is extremely small and other than getting past a EPA/DOT visual inspection I doubt it ever did much good. I've got a gas odor after tank fill problem that I think I've traced to the canister. No I have not done the exhaust manifold gasket and I don't think I want to if I can avoid it :-) Tom

All 400i were sold for Europe market and imported and certified.I'll check mine.I dont think it's there but I also have noticed differences depending on who certified the car.Mine was done by amerispec.Mine is an early 80 car.I'll look at the seats also.Where is the canister mounted at? |

I have a 1977 400 (carbs) and I would think these are the same. Under the front edge of each rear seat cushion (the bit you sit on) are two 10mm nuts, one in each corner pointing downwards. Remove these and you can lift out the seat cushions. Then there are two screws on each side if the rear armrest holding this to the central tunnel. This then just lifts out. To get the seat back out there is a screw on lower right corner and another on the lower left corner plus one in the recess left by the centre arm rest. Once these are removed you lift the seat back up towards the roof to unhook it from the rear bulkhead and then it just lifts away. I don't have a charcoal canister in my car and I would think that this is part of the EPA/DOT stuff put on your car in the US. Simon 1977 400 Auto in London |

Anybody with a 400i out there who can tell me how to remove the rear seat backs and arm rest? I'm tracing what appears to be a vacuum connection coming though the back of the trunk to a charcoal canister. Did the 400i come with a charcoal canister or was this added by the federalizer? |
