Tim:
You might want to check the integrity of the tanks, especially along the bottom, before you paint them. I stripped my tanks down to bare metal and then applied undercoating from a spray can, being careful to get just the right build-up and lumpiness. I then sprayed a top coat of polyurethane. After I completed my restoration of the engine bay, I filled the tanks with gasoline on a Friday night. When I returned to the car Saturday morning, I found the car sitting in a large pool of gas. Overnight, porosity that apparently had pre-existed opened up in several places. The polyurethane is impervious to the gasoline but the undercoating is not. The gasoline dissolved the undercoating and caused the polyurethane to bubble. The poyurethane skin could not contain the gas. I repaired the tank with epoxy and had no further trouble, but I wish I had detected the trouble before painting the tanks and had them repaired with welded patches.

Here are mine...
gastanks2

I used rubber undercoating in a spray can. It takes a while to get the right spray pattern and build up but I think it looks pretty good.
