Being a Ferrari Part Henryk, it probably cost too much...and it works, sort off...it just doesn't read the correct amps...ity tells you it is charging and then it tells you it is off. I am thinking about grounding it...and I will look in Hemming's...thanks for the suggestion, guys.

I don't know if this is any help, but I've read that the ammeters in 400's (and in most cases I believe would be the same part in a Boxer with just a different gauge-face) do go bonkers. I don't remeber the reason and there was some dash-frying involved, but could this be a similar situation?

I'm sorry if this isn't very helpful, your situation just reminded me of that problem...

Look in Hemmings News. I had a dash guage rebuilt from a TVR Griffith, years ago......I sent it to a place in NY.....came back like new.

I don't recall where, but a lot of specialty shops, restoring various old cars, advertise in this monthly magazine. I am sure you sill find someone.

What does a new one cost???????????

This -40 and +40 only started taking place after I had removed the ammmeter to get to the gas gauge. When I replaced the gas gauge, that was easy, but the ammeter was very difficult to screw into place. It took the delicate hands of my wife to position it and its clamp in the back, and then applying the round nut in the back to keep it attached...I am fairly confident it has been fried..the question then becomes, who can rebuild this? Any suggestions

Doctor, I am not sure that you could have damaged the ammeter by "shorting it." It is designed to pass a great deal of current. If you had shorted one of the hot leads to ground, with that current running through the ammeter, then you might have damaged the device.

Are you sure that the battery is not discharging when the car is off? I apologize for this question, but it is important. I assume that there is no current running through the ammeter when off (despite the -40 reading) as smoke, and fire, and paint melting, and leather burning, and all sorts of bad things would be evident.

I replaced my alternator after several weeks of it not functioning once hot. After replacing, my ammeter read +40 for several days (when charging) because the battery voltage had gotten so low that it took maximum alternator output (+40 amperes) to bring it back to 13.8 volts. What I am trying to say, and not well, is that it is possible that you are discharging while the engine is off (short somewhere) and charging like crazy when the engine is on.

If not discharging while off, then you fried your ammeter.

Finally, my Boxer is running great, new fuel pump, new check valve, rebuilt fuel distributor, new shocks, new clutch (the latter two thanks to a very efficient and friendly mechanic, Ed Gault), but now I notice my ammeter reads -40 when the car is off, and +40 when it charging..i.e. the car is running. I took out the gas gauge because it was not working and in order to do that, you have to remove the ammeter. When I reinstalled it, i forgot to disconnect the battery, and in the tedious process, I may have shorted it . Question is, who rebuilds these units? Anyone have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to chip in.
