The alternator and regulator is OK...the battery is charging. What is happening is the alt light is seeing a voltage difference across the wiring between the alternator and where the light is connected into the wiring at the fuse panel. The alternator gets exciter current through the light from the battery when the engine is not running and the ign switch is on. When the engine is running the regulator voltage is higher than the battery voltage which cancels the exciter current flow through the light which should cause it to go out. What is happening is the power from the alternator is distributed to the fuse panel and the ignition switch via a four way connector mounted under a white plastic cover near the fuse panel. Check out the connections on this distribution block. You will possibly have a connection on this block (the one feeding the fuse panel for the turn signals etc and the alt light) that has a high resistance connection possibly due to heating or corrosion. When extra power is drawn for turn signals etc the voltage difference is increased due to a poor connection (high resistance) and the light glows brighter. Have a look at the connections to the distribution block and replace any connector terminals that look suspect. I had the same problem with my 1980 GTS. Good luck brownyjs |

Matt, my '78 GT4 does the same thing. Battery has always remained fully charged, etc... I thought I might have had faulty alternator/regulator, but it seems to be a common situation judging by the response so far. |

I noticed that on mine. I think is is just light from other gage lights leaking in. |

Matt, The same thing happens on my 78 GTS, yet the batter remains charged. I'm beginning to believe this is a non problem. |

I have noticed at night. there is a very faint glow from the alternator/generator warning lamp. It gets brighter with the turn signals and brakes on. Also the wipers bring it on as well. Signs of a bad battery/alternator/water pump or psycho owner? |
