Well the winner is FRED! Took the car to a local a/c shop and they said it was definitely leaking out the schrader valves. Recharged the system and they said it is holding well. However, they still added the dye to check for leaks when I go back in a week, just to be sure. Blowing at 40 degrees now!!! Thanks for everyones suggestions and advice. Brent |

Mine leaked at the high limit switch, which is at the junction next to the drier. It was leaking out the electrical connection... GT Car had a replacement for ~20-30. Erik |

The flourescent dye is the best. You will need and infrared light to locate the leaks. The system must also have enough freon in it to run.If it leaked all out you will need to evacuate.recharge and then dye it.Recommend service shop.Any will do that serevices auto a/c.Also check where hoses go under heat shield at firewall.seems a lot get cut there from vibration. If it's there it will be large enough to hear under high pressure.Nitrogen at 350.lbs usually finds 90% of leaks. |

Yes, that's the same tool. However, not only do the valves come loose, but they sometimes leak and need to be replaced. |

Magoo, Is that like the same tool you use to unscrew the valves out of the valve stems in tires? |

Brent, The system should be charged so the dye leaks out under pressure. Fred is correct the Schrader valves may need tightening. These valves are the suction and high pressure valves located at the compressor. You can tighten them with the old style valve cap that has the split end or get a valve tool at your auto store. |

Thanks for the feedback I will try the dye route first. Do you have to have freon in the system for the dye to work? Just wondering since I think it has all leaked out. Also do you put the dye on all the fittings and joints to find the leak? Sorry , but I am a novice at A/C. Thanks Brent |

Buy some dye and drive for an hour with the A/C on full blast. You will locate your leak. |

Sounds like a leak in the system if it works when charged then drops off. Since your car is a 82' it uses R-12, which is more expensive than gold so it pays to fix the leak. (BTW, do NOT retrofit to the new freon) There are freon detectors as well as using dye and a black-light to find the problem. Have them look at the entire system, including the evaporator which in some cars is really hidden, the front of the compressor, hoses, dryer, etc... Also, have them check the schrader (sp) valves where they fill the freon. Sometimes the valves leak and it's a really inexpensive fix. |

I'd look for another leak in the system. Sometimes you have to resort to dye use to find the leaks. Yours sounds like a slow one. |

I have a 1982 308 GTSi and the a/c is only blowing at 68 degrees at the duct and the inside temperature of the car was only 72 degrees when I checked the duct temp. In May of this year I had my Ferrari mechanic replace the a/c dryer and all o-rings along with 3 lbs of freon. It blew cold for a couple of months and then slowly started becoming less effective. Any ideas what to look for or try next. I live in Southern California so I may need the a/c for a few more months. Thanks, Brent |
