One addition to Matt Boyd's 308 clutch replacement description - remember that the rear turnbuckle/union/adjustment sleeve just before the clutch linkage has a left hand thread on the front end and the lock nut turns the opposite direction. It was all chewed up by somebody and it's hard to find left hand metric thread nuts out here in the sticks! My turnbuckle was completely rusted shut anyway and had to also be replaced. The cable had at some time rode up and off that pully and deformed it. If all goes well the job takes about an hour or two and is not difficult but you might just want to order all the parts from clevis/fork forward and back if planning to do the job right and without delay and surprises. |

Steve Cook is working on the improved archive search for FerrariList. It has already improved considerably in the past month. The combination of the information provided by both facilities is a great help! |

Incredible. An absolutely perfect description of what I found and what to expect. Should save me hours. He also warns us to inspect the clutch cable as his '85 had only 3 of the 6 strands of cable left. Thanks again to this wonderful resource. I only wish FerrariList's search worked as well as this site. It took me a while to find it but it was worth the trouble. Thanks Gerrit! |

Matt Boyd published an excellent procedure to replace the cable. Check the FerrariList.com archives. Subject is "308 Clutch Cable Replacement Procedure", dated March 31, 2001. |

On my 1979 308 GTS with 39K my clutch cable broke at the pulley or pilot roller point where it comes out of the tube attached to the frame. The pulley is free but gunked up and moves slow. A good point to check whenever you're on a hoist. I will clean and relube it but haven't found a replacement pulley yet. It's possible the cable slipped off the pulley and rubbed on the bolt/shaft/axle, but I'm not sure. It's a massive cable and I can't hardly believe it wore and broke without some other problem. I didn't notice any changes in clutching or shifting, the cable just popped all of a sudden. Any tricks to replacement? Any FAQs or prior threads on the subject? Looks pretty straight-forward but I'm not sure if I can get at the attachment at the clutch end from beneath or have to remove the rear tire and fender well (or more). Can I just unscrew the cable at the rear union sleeve or do I have to take off the cable at the cotter pin/clevis on the clutch fork? By the way, what's that access hole with the rubber cover for about half way along the tube the cable runs through? |
