you can get the firewall side head off without pulling the studs...you do have to pull the studs for the cam cover nuts...did this on my 78...like everyone said though...it is much easier out of the car...and often times it takes considerable effort to "break" the seal when pulling the head (in my case..lots of cursing too!)

If oil leak is the only symptom that is bothering you, and the patch seems to be working, I would leave it alone and fix it later when there is really a better reason to. Low compression, bad oil consumption via the valve stem seals, bent valves, etc... are better reasons to pull the engine and do everything.

The only place I can think of where it maybe exactly leaking is the head-drain oil passageways, visible on the sides of the blocks (two vertical, linear protrusions, one of them passing right by phantom engine-mount flanges). Some head gaskets do not add a bead of sealant at those edges and they could leak.

If the patch is holding, leave 'em alone...

Thanks guys. I'll get the one replaced now or in just awhile and the patch seems to be holding.

Oliver, What else is the mechanic going to do? IMO if you are not due for belts for a while. Put off the repair(if the patch holds) until it is ready for serviceing the top end.

Regarding the forward gasket, surely a case of 'if it aint broke dont fix it' especially if the engine has to come out for access. Get just the rear one done for now.

If it were the front one that leaked then it would probably be prudent to do both as the motor had to come out in any case.

Oliver, if you do need a headgasket then it isnt cheap but the rear one is an in-car job where as the forward one requires engine removal because of the head studs. I would pull the engine rather than try to remove the studs which Ive heard mentioned before. If you damage the threads in the block for the studs, just shoot yourself right then and there. If it were mine, replace the rear only and deal with the front if and when the time comes. Dont cheap out on the headgasket itself, buy the real thing. You can cheap out on the seals and cam cover set with repros. Good luck.

Sounds awful expensive to me. Maybe ask around for a recommendation for a different mechanic?

I have a 1978 308gts that has a leaking head gasket which is dripping oil on the floor after having driven the car. My machanic says it will have to be replaced and while he is doing it he says I might as well do the forward one as well at an estimated cost of about $5,000.
Is this the going rate and is it difficult to do? I have only small tools and am not overly excited about doing something like this myself. Will this damage the car? There is no water in the oil so it is just leaking outside. He did spray a sealer on it as a bandade and it seems to be working. Anyone got an idea or thoughts?
