John: Make damn sure you shop those parts. I have found 3 to 1 and 4 to 1 price variance in F-parts, depending upon source.

Hank: I know these damn axle shafts are going to be a big pain the arse, but I am borrowing a air ratchet from a friend tomorrow who is a mechanic here in town and should hopefully be able to make my job a little easier. I have already reinstalled the brake rotor for the exact reasons you mentioned and tried breaking the axle bolts loose with a normal socket but as usual that wasnt enough. I'll keep you all informed as my adventure continues!

John: Taking off the outboard axle shaft is NO fun.......the bolts are frozen on. You will need a long 1/2 inch breaker bar to get the bolts loose. You may want to re-install the rotor, so that you can use the parking break to hold the wheel, so it doesn't turn while you try to loosen the bolts. Putting it in gear, alone, will not be enough.....if the bolt is on tight enough, then the engine will turn......been there, done that!!!!!!!! The hardest part will be loosening these bolts.

Hey guys I finally got off the damn brake rotor and the problem still exists! The parking break shoes all look fine but yet the wheel still binds up. So now I am disconnecting the drive shafts to totally eliminate it from being the tranny in anyway shape or form. However as I have stated before the grinding is coming from inside the hub so I believe it is the bearing. I am on the phone with Ferrari of Washington checking on parts right now but I have a feeling I am going to need someone to get me some ass lube cause I am going to get hurt. Especially if my car has the all in one hub, bearing, and what not! If anyone has a used hub to sell me let me know!

Wheel bearings make a severe grinding noise when bad you would also feel play in your wheel

When you pulled over was the wheel smoking or did it have a burning pad smell? If so you probably have a sticking caliper that overheated

Just wanted to update everyone that was kind enough to help out that I am still in the process of trying to remove the rotors without damaging them, so it is taking a lot longer than I expected to attempt to get down to the core problem. If anyone has any advice on removing the rotors or a nice quick short cut, it would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen some older Corvettes have a park brake shoe come loose and cause a similar situation.

Well today I am going to figure this problem out one way or another. It seems to me that the caliper and brake pads are both fine and in their usual posistion (they have a small gap between pad and disc). The disk seems to also be in good condition no noticeable bluring besides the usual and there are no cracks what so ever. I am going to run off for a while here to do some shopping but when I return I am going to pull the caliper and disk to inspect the parking brake. I sat out in teh garage till 2am yesterday trying to find if the clunk was coming from the brake housing or the tranny and to me it sure sounds like it is the brake housing, but you never know. I will keep you all updated as to what I find.

John: I am not sure about the other wheel having to be stuck also. The wheels, in the diff, are connected seperately.....ever notice, with the car in the air, that turning one wheel causes the other one to turn, but in the opposite direction?

I may be wrong, but I find it hard to believe that a parking brake problem will give the metal-to-metal "clunck" sound.

If it is in the wheel bearing, then you will have to disconnect the outboard driveshaft anyway, to get at it. Don't bad wheel bearings usually squeel?

Am curious as to what the problem is!

Take the brake pads out of the caliper and see if binding stops....

If it was in the differential would I be able to turn the driver side wheel freely with the tranny in neutral, while the passenger side binds every rotation. I would think that they would both bind. It sounds too that the clunk is coming from inside the wheel hub itself, so I am hoping and praying that it is either a wheel bearing or the damn parking break. It seems to me that none of the noise is coming from the tranny, but god only knows what is really wrong with the beast til I crack it open tomorrow. If you have anymore thoughts on what it could possibly be please let me know. Thanks for the help Hank!!

John: Make sure it isn't in the differential. I would remove the outboard axle shaft, and turn the wheel again. If it sticks.......it must be the wheel, probably the parking brake, as others have stated. If the problem goes away, then, heaven help you!!!!!!

This would take ALL doubt away regarding MAJOR expense.

Good luck,

Hank

The clunk sounds would almost make me place a bet a parking brake shoe is loose inside.

I have seen this before on a drum brake car, a shoe gets loose and binds up. The parking brake should be inside the rear discs, I have only replaced the pads on one for Chris, but this is how most are set up with 4 wheel discs. To check it out you will have to remove the caliper and disc. I hope it something this easy.

Also whenever the situation happens it is always in tune to a clunk-clunk sound. I sort of thought it was the break because if a little squealing that I was hearing on the limping drive home but when looking at the break I cant make out what the problem might be. What would bw wrong with the break caliper/disc that could cause this situation?

Bob,
Forgive my ignorance but what should I look for on the caliper and the disc. There seems to be no strange warpage or anything, but I can always look again. I will go out in the garage now again and jack her up to look at the parking break, I remember checking it before and everything look fine but then again I was still pissed that she had broke at the time so I might have missed something. Thanks for the help as always! :0)

John

From what you are saying I would look at the brake caliper and disc, next check parking brake, not just for operation but that nothing has come loose..

Good luck

He all I am calling on all the tech masters again to give me a little advice in an area I know nothing about! If any of you out there can help me I will greatly appreciate it.

Here is the problem: Today when driving the 348 down the highway coming back from a run, the right rear tire violently grabs making the whole car pull to the right, right off the highway and onto the shoulder. I figure I blew out a tire and was just thankful that I didnt reck the car. I get out of the car expecting to walk to the back of the car and see the tire flat, but to my surprise the tire is just fine and pressure checks out great. I get back in the car scratching my head and proceed to start up back down the road, all of a sudden bam! It does it again at about 20mph, so I limp the car home the rest of the way at around 10mph, thank god I was only 3 miles from my house. When I get home I jack the car up in the back pop the tranny in nuetral and spin first the left side rear wheel by hand and it spins smoothly as expected. However when I move to the right rear wheel I am met with a binding of the wheel making it really hard to turn about every rotation. It would bind, free up, then bind again. To me I am thinking this is a wheel bearing that has decided to give out on me, but I would like to know what all you think before I go off and start tearing down the right rear wheel and the break assembly to get at the bearing. Also does anyone here know a good place to get a set of wheel bearings for a 348? I figure if one rear one is bad I might as well replace all of them at once to minimize the chance of this happening again.

Thank you for all your help and if you need any more info to help diagnose the situation please let me know and I will be happy to supply it.
