It may be an entirely beast altogether (most likely is), but my Borla has no resonators in the tips, just fins holding the center tube (no real effect with this, just their trademark, plus it looks good). Its hard to describe, but it was like hearing the individual firings of the cylinders (at thousands of times). A resonator basically absorbs those exhaust pulses and smooths out the sound. Damn, I wish I could play a sample of it now (when my car is back together). |

Has anyone ever removed the inserts from the muffler exhaust pipes. If so what kind of sound did you get or do you have? Curious. |

I have played with this quite a bit in the past few weeks. What works is to make the inserts yourself from 18 or 20 gauge stainless steel sheet. Anything else will fail. Cut it with tin snips to approximately 2.5" by 7". Wrap it around a broom handle to form it. Then carefully insert it up to and just past the perforated portion of the tip, recessed a couple inches from the end of the chrome portion. The metal will unwind and stay put. The welds that retain the original perforated metal act as a lip and retain the ss inserts. I picked up some scrap SS sheet from a local fabricator for free. Do not try to use aluminum or galvanize metal flashing, it will not withstand the heat and will shrink up and blow out. This ss insert is exactly what your dealer will sell you. Ferrari of Los Gatos was selling four of these for about $25 a few years ago. Don't know if they still do. Mine have been in for a four days with no problems yet. The ones I tried out of other material came out within a day. If these don't stay put, I will make more and have them tack welded by a muffler shop for a few bucks. They are nearly invisible by the way, and don't seem to change the sound in any way. Good luck. Others have just chopped off the offending resonators and replaced them. Seems extreme since the resonators are in otherwise good shape. All that has happened is the fiberglass packing has burned/rotted out and the air passing by the perforated metal is making the annoying whistle sound. There is no rust or anything else really wrong. Someone else is using hi-temp epoxy to fill the perforations. It may withstand the heat, but my train of thought is that the vibration will cause it to crack and fall out over time. I could be wrong though. |

Look a few threads down under exhaust tip resonators for some fixes. |

Have a 308qv that sounds like an old vw bug. The dealer told me that I can purchase replacement inserts for the tailpipes to stop the noise. Has anyone done this? How do you get the old inserts out? They look welded in? Difficult job? thanks.. |
