Good luck with this project and keep us up-to-date as you progress. I'm long over-due posting pictures of my rebuild here, it'll come soon.

Peter I first wish to thank you for the link to a paper about engine removal.
Now about the oil loss.. I really don't know how the previous owner ran out of oil. I doubt he ran completely out, just down enough to starve the engine over and over one time and again till he caused a bearing to start making noise. I'm only guessing as I never met the owner. The car was running when he took it to a dealer, they determined that he had run the oil low, and because of the noises that he had caused enough damage to require a rebuild or replacement. I never heard the car run, although the dealer told me it would start but they advised I not start the car. The engine is not locked up. So I made a good buy even if I had to buy a new short block which Parts Source said they would sell me, also I located an engine with about 30,000 miles.

Bernie, I'm in the midst of rebuilding my GT4 engine, although not for the same reason you are J

Did the previous owner explain how he managed to loose 10 litres of oil? One of the oil cooler lines burst? Exploding UFI filter syndrome? Forgot to put back the oil-pan plug (I'm not joking with these questions).

How in the hell did he manage to run the engine out of oil ?I guess it'll make a nice table now, or maybe an expensive boat anchor LOL

Peter, I'm removing the engine because the previous owner ran the car out of oil. This is my ferrari project car.

Try this link, its on a removal of QV, so would be similar to your 328:

Any reason why you're yanking out the engine of your car?
