I have 17" Simmons http://www.simmonswheel.com.au/range.html FR17 rims on my 87 Mondial 3.2 Coupe. I used to run Pirelli all round (225 front & 255 rear). The front end was extremely heavy and the rear oversteered easily. I recently changed to Yokohama Aspec db (A500) 225 front & 265 rear and boy what a change! The A500 tyres are essentially a high performance tyre with particulalry low noise characteristic (this is not why I chose them). My tyre guy recommended I try them as he thought they were a sensational tyre. The front now steers almost as if it has power steering, they tramline just a little and they do not understeer. I then replaced the rears with the same A500 and again the grip was excellent, no more snap oversteer. I would thoroughly recommend these tyres for a Mondial! In any size particularly on the front. The only disadvantage of these tyres is that they have a relatively soft sodewall which has the effect of allowing the car to "boat" around corners a little more than the older tyres used to. Certainly comfortable for cruising though! FYI I run them at 38psi front & rear. Changing to these tyres on this car completely changed my opinion on this car, before it was a bit of a chore to drive now I love it! Although quick high speed lane changes and high speed cornering feels a bit "boaty". Ah, compromise... PC http:/fly.to/mondial

Tom - thanks for the info and link. I did actually buy the car directly from Christian and I had seen his post with the original wheels before he did the mods. |

Matt, it's absolutely a compliment and I told Nick so already. So you work at Forza? It was very interesting to hear from you - the car is really great. |

Tony, I'm glad you are enjoying the power. Nick and I went thru that Mondial. As to the porting: yes on pump and heads. Basically that was the extent of the mods. We pay particular attention to building the motor with STREET use in mind, and that one is a great example of how it turns out. Flowbench testing was done first, with Christian invited to watch ( how many can lay claim to seeing their heads checked on a Flowbench?) Followed by a discussion on what he wanted from the motor. Cams were left stock (Euro), and porting was done with an emphasis on velocity. The result is what you are driving. We consider it a compliment to hear that you are happy with the car. Enjoy! |

Tony, OK I'll try to post them in the showroom under Mondials. If I can't post, there is a fellow who has helped me in the past. BTW, my email is: [email protected] I love the color of your car. And, the fact that it a Euro model, you have factory higher compression and better cams. It is easy to believe that you are over 300+ HP with porting. And with a stebro, I'm positive. Also, I'll bet you get more oomph off the line then I. But,I still like my turbo. I bought some Yokohama AVS sport tires, they stick good and are quiet. Your right about being all Ferrari, people just freak when they see Mondials. (Different then the easily recognized 308.) Chat later. |

oops, I forgot to mention it is a Euro model so it had an extra 10BHP to start with compared to a North American version. Also forgot about pictures. I'm not too good with computers so I will email them to you Edward. Maybe you can put them on the thread? |

Yes, thanks Tom. I also just checked with Ferrari of Ontario and the technician said the technical manual confirms the rear size as 225/55-16, so I guess we have several confirms now. This is the size I am going to get, and 205/55-16 on the front. I think I've settled on Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position tires, unless anyone has a better idea. Edward, nice to hear from a fellow Mondial fan. Most people don't love them like us which means they're cheap to buy! I think the front end says "Ferrari" more than any other model. Mine is an '86 3.2 Coupe with a sunroof. It is prugna (bergundy) metallic on grey leather with about 59k kms. They guy i bought it from spent a stupid amount of money fixing it up, including new paint. He had the engine done by Nick Scianna at Nick's Forza Ferrari. I'm no mechanic but I guess he ported and polished everything, new water pump, did the whole top end plus all belts, tensioners etc, plus it has a Stebro exhaust. They claimed it makes 320bhp, which I doubted until I drove it! It is certainly over 300bhp because it is easily as fast as the 348 Speciale I used to own. The sound is spine-chillig at 5000rpm+. I just love the car. As for the wheels, consider yourself a good bargain hunter. I paid US$2300 including shipping for four rims. I wish I had talked to you before. |

my owners manuel says - 205/55 vr 16 for fronts and 225/55 vr 16 for the backs - goodyear eagles. this is consistent with the metrics 220/55 vr 390 and 240/55 vr 390s |

Tony, Wow, 235's in the front! aaaaaa ha ha Those are large meats, and no power steering. I looked on ebay but couldn't find your Gotti's.(Just curious) What color is your Mondi? What year? Cabriolet? Any photo's? (I love Mondials) I paid $550.00 each for my 16" x 7". How much did Shaughnassy want for the wheels you bought?

Edward: You are right on the money about low speed manouverability - it's heavy. I currently have 235/45-17 front and 245/45-17 rears that came with my '86 Mondial. The steering is heavy, it has a lot of kickback over bumps and driveway lips etc and it tramlines like a pig (contrary to tests I had read saying the Mondial tracks with "ballistic accuracy"). The fronts stick out 1/3" from the wheel well but the rears do fit, barely. So you can fit 245s if you want. I bought 7" fronts (for 205 tires) and 8" rears (for 225s) from Tom Shaughnessy in California and he warned me not to make the mistake of getting 50 series aspect ratio on the back, that Mondials actually came with 55s all around, like you said. I just wanted to be sure before I buy tires. You can see the wheels on my car on ebay, search for "Gotti wheels" and they are the ones with Bridgestone tires. |

Tony, I am in the process of performing the same change. (390mm to 16") I bought two 16" from Gentry Lane. I believe the 328's had the stagger tire sizes, 205/55-16 front and 225/50-16 rear. But the Mondial's had 225/55-16 all around. I feel that without power steering, 225's in the front would make the car a pain at low speed. What width are your 16"s? I bought 7" but I think these are from a 328 front, thus the 205 size for that car. I think the Mondial T's had 8" front rims and 10" rear. (As you can see, I also am confused. But, I am going to stick with the 205/55-16" on the 16" X 7" rims for the front for slow speed manuverability. And, because at this point I feel there are few rules for us to follow, I want some big FAT245-16 on 16" X 10" for the rear. I believe they will fit because 17" X 10" from a 348 will fit on the rear of our cars.) |

some mondials came with metric rims orginally - during the 3.2 run they switched over to 16 in rims like on the 328. I would not use the ferrari.it website, if no one helps here, call a dealer and see what ones they would put on |

I recently bought 16" original Ferrari wheels for my Mondial and am about to buy tires but do not know the correct size. FNA website lists specs as 205/55-16 front, and 225/55-16 rear but the ferrari.it website lists the rears as 225/50-16 (fronts are the same). can anyone advise me definitively what the correct rear size is? |
