I thought that without any freon in the system there would be no pressure and therefore the compressor would not cycle. Does that make any sense? Joe |

You do need the a/c for the defogger that's for sure. I just meant a compressor isn't needed to blow warm air. Of course I didn't realize the TRs did this. My mom's Caddie is the same way, like some kind of auto heat-pump I guess. |

Tommy, The only problem with that is the A/C is used many times with the heat on to eliminate window fogging. Some cars don't have a A/C cut out. The compressor runs anyway regardless of heat or not unless you shut down the entire system. |

Yes, James is correct -- This was resolved in a earlier thread of the same title. I have no idea where this second thread came from -- note it is 3 weeks old. James and Steve helped out and solved this already. I have been running heat for 2 weeks as the compressor was unplugged from the system. I apologize but I did not put this duplicate thread here -- I was surprised like James to see it. Michael PS; Thanks Michael Klein -- your advice is dead on. |

Dr. Tommy, I believe Michael is referring to a TR. Early TRs required that the AC system be turned on to provide heat or cooling, and a thermostat was turned to adjust temperature. When the AC system was on, the compressor would cycle, even if heat was desired. Thus, by turning on the heater, the AC compressor was at risk. This was discussed in an earlier thread, and I thought resolved. The simplest solution is to simply unplug the wire leading to the electric clutch at the compressor. Jim S. |

The heater has nothing to do with the a/c. They are completely seperate systems. Blow the heater all you want, just don't turn on the a/c blower. My ex-girlfriendused to push the a/c button on in her car and slide the levers to hot to get heat. I have probably saved her tens of dollars in gas since I clued her in. |

YES. But you need to either a)remove the a/c compressor drive belt, or b)electrically disconnect the compressor clutch at or near the clutch itself. Don't run the compressor with open hoses!! It's not even a very good idea to leave the system open (ie open hoses) due to contamination and/or corrosion concerns. Mike. |

Guys, I have a question. One of my AC hoses developed a leak a while ago. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I have been driving the past 2 months with the window down and loving my exhaust note (no cats and precats) what a nice driving experience. I have had the hoses sitting here for 2 months but can't get myself to take the car in as I just keep driving it. Ok, its getting colder here and now may need to use the heat in the mornings. My AC system has no freon or pressure in it but all the hoses are hooked up etc. What I would like to know is can I turn on the HVAC system and use the heat settings (75 degress) without harming the AC system in any way? Thank you for your help. Michael |
