AF 3 is the mark for timing at idle. The US-QVs has 3 degrees late at idle. This is the reason, for my opinion, why some QVs has a little firing problem at idle. The 3 degree late firing works only fine if all injection parts are nearly perfect. If the injectors are a little bad its a problem to fire up the gas at these timing. The US-cars has these timing only for the emissions. The euro cars has 12 degrees before at idle. Dirk

Tim, See this thread for a photo of my '80 Euro 308's PM1-4 mark: http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/129380.html Forgot to suggest using Binder Clips when re-installing belts. The cams turn 50% of the crank so that is why you the marks on the cams seem to line up whether on pm1-4 or af3. The way to set the static timing up is to only rotate the motor in the driven direction and bring up pm14. The set the cams to line up. You only go to the other numbers (except pm58) when adjusting/testing distributor timing. |

Bob -- You can edit your posts by clicking on the little notepad in the upper right corner of your messages (within 1 hour of posting). I saw you fixed the notation to ATDC in the second post, but do you literally mean "6 minutes" ATDC (I'd have guessed 3 deg ATDC). |

AF3 is a ignition timing mark = 6'ATDC As you turn the flywheel you should see five marking for each bank PM 1-4 and PM 5-8 A5 34' / AF 16' / +6' / PM 1-4 / AF 3 All four cams should line up on the PM 1-4 mark. Only turn the flywheel CCW to avoid loosening timing belts. Bob |

The slash after the 4 is the T.D.C. mark for cylinder #1.

Looking through the inspection cover I see: PM1-4| |AF3 Which horizontal slash is the TDC? There is such a small distance (maybe .5 inch) between the 2 that the cams still appear to be lined up. Which is the correct mark and what does AF3 mean? |
