i think time intervals are more critical in cars that are lightly used. oil in a crankcase is full of acids and other such nastys that cause it to deteriorate it may take some a year to put 3000 on the odometer. i try not to let the oil sit more than 4 months and always change the filter. |

In reading my post again, I realize I neglected to offer my opinion as to mileage (another senior moment). On my cars that get driven a lot, I change it every 3000 miles. The Ferrari does not get 3000 miles of use a year. So for it the criterion is time, not distance. |

At about 1800 miles I start hanging out at Walmart waiting for Mobil 1 to go on sale. When I finally see a good buy, I change it, usually at or just over 2000 miles. Baldwin filter. Most will think this is overkill, but I work in a shop that does a lot of engine work. Almost without exception, engine failure is due to lubrication issues. In a Chevy truck, if you change oil at 10K or so, expect 70k-80k engine life. The other extreme is a guy who changes it every 1500 miles and has over 400k on the clock w/o valve covers coming off. He's had to buy a couple of oil pans, tho, as he keeps wearing out the threads for the plug. |

You'll find as many opinions about this as you will find regarding politics/religion. I have had a 328 for 15 years. The oil gets changed about every 8 to 12 months along with the filter. I drive the car every other week at least and for at least 20 miles or so whenever I drive it. When I tracked the car, the oil was changed every other track event which is also what I do with my current (non-Ferrari) track car. IMO - change the oil and oil filter at least once a year. While modern oils are technologically superior, their superiority can't do too much about contamination. And don't forget about coolant and brake fluid. |

I notice in my handbook that although the interval for the oil filter is 6000 miles it gives an oil change interval of 3000 miles, does anyone else stick to this or can this be done every 6000 with the filter given the fact that modern oils are technologically superior to older oils. Incidently I have been using Castrol GTX Magnatec which is semi-synthetic and the correct viscosity and found it to be fine. |
