Oh yeah sorry.... It was the alternator belt that was slipping.

A couple of turns to adjust the tension on the belt and it was fine again.

Phew... This time it was cheap to fix.

I think that is what it is, maybe the alternator belt. I heard the noise while in neutral now too.

Will bring the car over to the mechanic in an hour... Will find out then.

It could just be a belt slipping, let's hope as that's the easiest to fix. I test drove an early TR about a year ago that had been sitting for a few days and it made a terrible noise when started. The mechanic leaned in with a wrench and a breaker bar and the sound went away....Norm

Sounds like it could be the clutch release bearing making a noise until it warms up.

I have recently gotten a very high pitch noise (sounds like a belt is slipping at high speeds, or two plates not making a firm contact) from the engine compartment when completing a shift from 1st to 2nd, and even 3rd.

It has only happened twice, and both times were within 5-10 minutes of starting the car cold. I have never noticed the noise after switching when the engine is warm.

It appears like no acceleration is lost while this is happening, but of course I switch to neutral immediately so it is hard to tell if power is decreased.

This could be related to me trying to improve my starting techniques last week (and therefore causing excessive wear on the clutch).

Any thoughts? Will bring it by to the mechanic next week.
