My thump is from the rear. I know it isn't the tie rod ends as I just replaced them and they are aligned properly. |

The fans were OK and I just re-attached them. I spent 2 weeks baffled by the noise though. I assumed it was something expensive and was happy to discover (for a change) that it only cost a few minutes of my time to rectify. |

Thanks all for your replies ! In no particular order : Bouncing the car has no effect, and the damper is very strong (i.e. it's difficult to push the car down !) Fans : I had this problem a year or two ago, and I fixed the problem then. I will recheck it's not come loose though. To be honest, this is more of a "suspension clunk" if you know what I mean (speaking from experience). David, out of interest, what did you do, replace the fans ? Tie rod end : good thought. Apart from grabbing hold of it and wiggling, how would I test this ? |

My '79 308 did the same thing - a very definite knocking on a less than smooth road. Turned out to be one of the 2 fresh air fans in the front had come adrift. The other one was about to detach as well. |

More probably the tie-rod end. |

I noticed on my 78' 308 that when I make a hard left turn, u-turn, I will hear a knock, or thump, thump, when I am turning and then I don't hear it anymore. My QV doesn't do it but the 78' does. Is this similar? Wheel bearing? |

Um, well it's a definate "knock" (as opposed to body flex or rattle) and it's only just started (has never done it before) so I'd like to try and trace it :-) |

Mine has done it for a couple of years. Ferrari said not to worry. It is the bodywork, suspension, wheel wells flexing. |

another thought - not sure how it is on the 308 but occassionaly the bodywork fender losens on some mondials and it rattles if you go over a bump |

did you try to carefully push down on that corner and see if you hear it or whether the car comes back up cleanly ans smoothly? |

My 308 (1980 carb) has just started with slight fault .... occasionally there's a bump or knock from the front LH (passenger in UK, drivers in US) suspension, particularly when going over grates, depressions or potholes in the road. It's not very loud, but I want to stop it. I've visually inspected that corner, and nothing appears out of kilter. I've tried the old jack the car up and use a crowbar under the wheel trick, but that didn't show any movement or knocking, neither did the 12-6 or 3-9 rocking tests on the wheel. How do I find this knock ? Any tips anyone ? |
