I've never had a Cu washer/plug need retightening (so I guess I'm confessing to be an overtorquer -- I've broken more bolts than have fallen out :-)). Usually it's the problem you describe -- needing a fairly large moment arm for removal (and having access to use it). The TRs have got huge drain plugs on the gearbox that really take the difficulty up even another level (i.e., getting the plugs out without breaking the surrounding gearbox casting!) so I'm using a little Loctite PST on the crushable CU washer and tried to be gentle with the install. It's hard to describe, but you should feel the annealed Cu washer deform and strain-harden during the final few degrees of rotation, but no need to jump on them. Just take a peek under the car in a few days to confirm no weeping and it should be OK for the service interval.

Steve,

Now I know what you mean about loosening the fill plugs first. On a 328, the gearbox and the clutch housing fill plugs are nearly impossible to break loose. Even the drain plugs I had to use an extension to get more torque to able to brake them loose.

I don't think they have to be re-tighten after a few runs. Do they?

Yes -- all 5 308/328 drain/fill plugs use the 22 x 27 x 1.5 Cu washer. Never seen a written torque spec for these (but since they're large diameter/fine pitch they have a very shallow thread helix angle and the tendancy is to overtorque -- usually a good idea to make sure you can loosen the fill plugs before removing the drain plugs).

BTW, do all these use a 22x27x1.5 solid copper sealing washer?

Thanks
