Sean, That pump should not make a difference unless you have a bad diverter valve. Anyway you can unhook it and it might help some. The only problem is that over time the exhaust gases backing up will burn out the injection port tubes and could freeze up your AIR pump.

There is occasionally a pop out the top of the carbs. I believe that the smog pump is still hooked up. (if it's the pump right next to the rear bank, with a tiny belt running it) Would it help anything to take that belt off? I checked the best I could for an exhaust leak, and can't find one.

Sean

When my car "blew its pipes" like an M-80 going off in the exhaust and the header was glowing red, the cause was one of the carbs flooded and overflew into the engine. I replaced all the needle valves, checked and adjusted the floats, readjusted the mixture, and it went away.

Sean,

Your carbs sound lean because of the popping sound. You can clear a fouled plug with a quick blast to the redline.

Sean, it could be a few things...
Do you still have the smog gear hooked up?
Are you getting any popping from the carbs,
or just the exhaust?
Check for an exhaust leak?
Just a few thoughts...
Let us know.

I do have an MSD system also, it came like that when I bought the car a year ago. It just started popping one day. I heard a lot of guys said a fouled plug could do that. I replaced the plugs, and that's when I noticed the gap was .044, just as was stated, it looked like someone didn't even gap them, just put them in. I took it for a test drive, still popped, and when I shut the car off this time, sounded like a M-80 in the exhaust pipe. Anyone have any other suggestions? Would a bad gap in the plugs cause popping like that? It ran fine before with those old plugs, but then one day just started popping on accel and deceleration. Now with new plugs, does it mostly on deceleration, but still a bit on acceleration.

Sean, did you switch from points as well?
On my 77 308 I have a single dizzy with electronic ignition, MSD, and blaster coil...
I gap the plugs at around .045 and they work great.

Sean.

Sounds like someone just took a plug from the box and put it in.

If you are using a hotter coil then the orig. coil I would increase the gap, but if you are using the standard coil set the gap as Matt suggests around .025.

Nope.

The gap needs to be .023 to .027

I have a single distributor kit installed. The paperwork that came with it, says to use Champion N9Y plugs at .026 gap. I took out a plug and it is an Autolite 64, the gap is .044. Is this way wrong, or does it depend on the brand of plug, as to the gap?
