I'm running AVON CR28s 380s. Cost me $140 each including shipping. They're a good all weather tire. See my previous post w/photo & mfg. link: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/153882.html I'm quite happy with them for daily driving. If I ever seriously track the car, I'll get 16" wheels with a high perf. tire.

Dan M. -- The 308 reproduction wheels may not be an option for your Mondial QV as all the 308 (and 328 non-abs) chassis use a wheel with an ~+11mm offset. The '89 328 abs wheels I believe have much larger "+" wheel offsets, like the Mondial family, so they probably are a good option for you to pursue (I've heard wheel offset numbers like +44mm and +55mm for a particular Mondial, but I have no real data. If you know your metric Mondial QV wheel offsets please post, or if anyone else has some solid Mondial wheel offset data please post and note model). Likewise 348 (and probably 355) wheels I think have even slightly larger + offsets (and if so, a small spacer might be required, but probably nothing too large) so could be another option. Same thing here -- if someone's got some solid 348, 355, 360, etc. wheel offset data please post. |

Guys, I was told by Bob Jane (a large tyre retailer in Australia) that the Coker TRXs are remolds. Does that concern anyone? No one sells them here in Oz and the Avon substitute is also not avialable. I have a decision to make in the new year. Either import the Coker TRX remold, or the Avon, or take the plunge and buy new rims to suit an imperial tyre. I'm tending towards the latter - any advice. I understand the 89 328 rims look good, and I'll check out the 308 replcement listed. Do you guys find the TRX a noisy and hard tyre? Anyone have experiance with the Avon - grip, noise etc. Regards |

I recently purchased new TRX's from Tirerack.com. I think the whole purchase including delivery was just over $800. I wasn't going to do that much better with a 16" tire, much less after I popped another $1600 on wheels. The TRX's are fine. No problems. |

Thanks Bob - the looks must be deceptive as I thought the inward sidewall deflection on the 245 rears would be more apparent. |

Barney -- The "stock" US 308QV 16" tire sizes are: front 205/55-16 rear 225/50-16 but I preferred to run front 205/55-16 rear 225/55-16 (which filled up the rear wheel well a little better IMO and added a hint more forward chassis rake -- but I also prefer that the front coachwork be lowered a bit too) Bob -- are your wheel widths also 7" and 8"? They look wider in your profile pic (although I think others have reported using the same tire sizes on the 7" and 8" widths successfully).

I looked at the 16" repro wheels. The aftermarket wheels say they are 7" in the front and 8" in the back. What is a good tire size for each? (My current set are the same size on all corners) |

Do the 16" wheels go right on the car with no modifications? Any clearance problems, spacers, or patterns to worry about? |

Barney, Keep in mind that you are able to buy the TRX tires, (Michelin), from Sam's Wholesale club MUCH cheaper. You will not be able to find them on the floor though- You will have to PRESS the salesman to look in the book- HARD- THEY ARE IN THERE!!!!! That being said, I bought 16" wheels for mine. I only bought the 390 Michelins for my show wheels. Best of luck.

$400 that is very high. I can get them locally in TN for $145. (Michelin) If you want to order them let me know. Even since you have to ship them it would still be cheaper. $400 is a rip off. |

Here is the link to the 240mm Coker TRXs. $242 each http://www.coker.com/Prodviewer.asp?ID=850 I guess that isn't really too bad if the tires work reasonably well. |

I ordered my repro wheels direct from superformance in the UK for about $1550 delivered including customs. That's a pretty good price from GT Car Parts. They buy from Superformance. |

Another local (US) source for 16" 308 reproduction wheels that look perfect is www.ferraripartsexchange.com located in Campbell, CA. Looked at a set just before I sold my 308QV - cost approx $1600 - 1800. Almost the same price as those strange tires. |

The TRX rims have a special bead pattern designed to have extremely good sealing & retention. Were supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread in the late '70s & early '80s. Mustangs, Thunderbirds, BMW, Ferrari & others offered them as a high-end option. Now here are only 2 tires still being made for the 390 TRX rims: 'Michelin TRX's' & Avon CR28s. The 'Michelin TRX's' are made by Coker Tire under license from Michelin. Coker specializes in reproducing tires for vintage cars. They use the original Michelin molds, tread compounds & construction process. They're fairly pricey, more like $400 when I was looking last spring. Coker only makes a run every year or so. Once in a blue moon Tire Rack has some. The Avon CR28 is a fairly modern 'specialist performance' tire design with modern compounds. It's made in Great Britain, & is almost affordable with the member discount(see below). Take a look at one:
For some details go to: http://www.avontyres.com/us-only.asp?id=137 Avon is a division of Cooper tire. MEMBER DISCOUNT ON AVON CR28s: A FerrariLister negotiated a member discount last year with a Belle Tire store in Ohio. Last summer I bought a set of Avon CR28s for $145 including shipping. A week later 4 tires arrived. Were shipped from NJ, & had a mfg. date less than a month before. I've been running them all summer. IMHO, They are a reasonable street tire.(V-rated) They have good wet road traction. I'm happy with them. They're not soft/sticky enough for a serious track tire. On the plus side, they're showing almost no wear after ~2,000 miles! There's a post with the salesman's name & phone# either here and/or in the FerrariList. Search the archives for TRX, & Belle Tire. If you can't find a post, then search the FerrariList archives. Be sure to tell him you're a FerrariChat member & I referred you. BTW, because of the rim's bead design, it's very dangerous to try to run a non-TRX tire on a TRX rim. A bit too hard of a corner & the bead pulls of of the rim & at best you're in a ditch somewhere. |

390mm is approx. 15.35". If they are 390s I am not sure how anyone put other tires on it safely. The metric tires are around $160-$200 each. Not very reasonable. |

Barney, those are the dreaded metric rims. I have a set of those also on my Dino GT4. You must buy metric rubber for them and they can be expensive. The problem is that many places don't carry the metric rubber and it is old technology. The other option is to buy the aftermarket 16" rims (Superformance) or if you can find them the QV 16" rims (expensive) or even the 14" rims. If you upgrade to the 16" then you can buy a modern tire, which is what I did. MOMO also makes a good looking 5 spoke rim that kinda looks Original. |

I have a 1981 308 GTBi with wheels stamped 165 TR 390 FH-PR and tires 240/55/VR415. I think the 390 is just over 15". Is there anything special I should know before buying new tires since the rim is not really 15"? Also what the heck is the "4" in "415"? |
