Just hold the clutch in longer to give the gears a chance to stop spinning. This takes longer when warm because the grease is thinner. Can happen in any car. Dave |

I thought it was standard procedure on most European cars to go into 2nd gear before going into reverse. I have always done this with Fiats, Alfas, VWs, Ferraris etc. Anyone else? |

Similar thing happens on my 78 308. Also on my 87 SAAB 9000 turbo. Agree with the mechanical explanations here. The general solution is to select a gear or two before reverse. I read in the archives of a guy selecting 2nd then 4th, then reverse. No gring. For several months now, that has been my routine for shifting into reverse--haven't had a grind since. --Mike |

Although I'm not a mechanic and cannot explain exactly why this happens, I've had 2 cars which have had this symptom and it both cases, reverse wouldn't grind if I shifted to first gear first--go figure. I never had any tranny/ clutch problems with these cars either. |

Al -- Another cause of this problem can be that the clutch system is not fully disengaging when you depress the clutch pedal (which is really always the case). When cold there may be enough viscous lubricant drag in the gearbox itself to prevent the intermediate stuff from rotating (when the clutch pedal is depressed) so selecting reverse doesn't crunch (as bad) under those conditions. As an experiment -- when warm (clutch depressed, car stopped, engine running) try selecting 1st gear (which will stop the intermediate stuff from rotating) then in a quick (but gentle) move try selecting reverse before the intermediate stuff can get rotating. (Although even if that helps it sounds like you should still verify the clutch mechanical cable/lever adjustments are OKish.) |

After I drive the car for a while I can't get it into reverse without grinding. It doesn't do it when it's cold. Someone rec'd "Militec" additive. He said he had the same problem in another car (non-F) and added a few ounces and the problem went away. |
