Turned out the jets were clogged up, when cleaned and a new diaphragm replaced, the car started easily and ran extremely well. That's a relief.

Bill, as a matter of fact, I had cracked diaphragms and I replaced all of them with the new ones being sold nowadays. They were all cracked. Ignition spark strength makes lots of sense. I'll check that. Weak coil sounds like the right diagnosis. I'll let you know.

When were the valve clearances last checked? I know when I have had starting problems in my four valve per cylinder motorcycle when cold, it is because the valve clearances are too tight. It will start fine once warm, but next time from cold, difficult to start. Once the clearances are set properly, all is well.

Not sure if this would apply to your Daytona, but would explain the difficulty when starting from cold, yet starts fine when warm.

Dr.
I believe you've owned a Daytona for quite a while, so forgive the basics, but...
When you turn the key to on, are you letting the fuel pumps run until they slow down (indicates full carb bowls) before turning to "crank"? If so, you may want to pull the air cleaner top off after the car has sat stationary for a day, then work the throttle linkage to see if the accelerator pump nozzles are all discharging fuel. I've seen cases where today's "environmentally friendly" fuel has hardened the accelerator pump diaphragms until they crack and drip fuel out, draining the carbs and creating a fire hazard.

Another check would be ignition spark strength during crankover. Remove one plug wire and insert a #2 phillips screwdriver into the wire end. Holding the screwdriver about 1/4" away from a metal ground, have a helper crank the engine and the spark should jump this distance and be bright blue. Repeat for the other bank. Perhaps you have a weak coil or failing resistor.

having difficulty getting my daytona to start. I have to keep the starter going for quite a while, and after many repeated tries and recharging of the battery, it finally starts. When it does, it runs great...no problems, and will start again if turned off. But by the next day, the same problem reappears. I thought maybe it was having difficulty getting gas to the carburettors, by why when started it runs well, and then restarts without difficulty? But not the next day... anyone out there with any ideas about that?
