The gear oil seems to matter a bunch, but I'm finding that what works in your car may not work in mine. When I originally got my car last Feb. it had Mobil 1 in the gearbox. Was VERY stiff when cold, 2nd being quite impossible. I recently went to a blend of RedLine products, and it has a slight 'crunch' going into all gears when cold (and, yes, it does go into 2nd), but shifts like butter when very hot. Go figure. Others report very different experiences. |

Hi Phil, When I had my Alfa Romeo Spider, I had the gearbox totally re-built and put in Agip reverse viscosity synthetic gear oil formulated for the Testarossa. Turns out it was too 'slippery' to allow the sychros to operate properly and the gears crunched no matter how carefully I shifted. I then changed back to mineral oil and the crunching stopped instantly. Chances are the sychros are good and it was just the oil. By the way Phil your GTB looks fantastic! Wondering who I am....click on my name to the left and the picture will give it away. |

Phillip, The weak syncro to look out for is the 2nd. I got my money on to much fluid. M |

Phillip, Could it be possible you overfilled the case? Reason being that a similar event occured with my 78 gts. The shop has overfilled (slightly) and it did not allow the trans to "breath" It crunched and did not allow shifting into 4th and 5th. Once the extra fluid was drained, it was perfect. My 2 cents M |

The oil should have an LSD additive, whether it came with it, or you have to add it separately. If its stopped with this recent change, it probably has the additive already. Read the fine print on the container. I have an 80W90 in my car and it shifts with no problems, even cold (well, its a little stiffer then, but it always goes into gear). No Ferrari transmision part is cheap, no matter from who. |

I have a 1978 308 GTB carb. I recently replaced the gear box oil and it began crunching gears. I used an EP90 GL5 gear oil. I then replaced this oil with a general 80w/90 GL4 grade and the crunching stopped. However I am not sure if this oil provides enough protection for the differential. Has anyone ever come across this problem before and if so what gear oil would be recommended? I am not sure if this is a syncro problem, if so does anyone know where I can buy Syncro rings at a reasonable price? |
