My clutch works perfectly except under one condition. On the track when I am up around 6-7K rpm's and shifting really fast from 2nd to 3rd it grinds like the syncros are giving up. It only does it in 3rd under those conditions and even then not everytime. It seems to do it when things get really hot like towards the end of a session. It NEVER EVER grinds 3rd on the street even under "mildly aggressive" driving. Clutch or syncros? |

Thanks guys, we'll look into a new throw out bearing...the car runs smoothly and shifts nicely, it is just an annoying whirring noise that I would like to get rid of. |

Dr. Ibrahim, it is your throw out bearing. Replace it and it will be smooth again. |

Normally, Dr. Ibrahim, noises like that occur because of pilot bearing failure. You'd experience it everytime you disengage the clutch, but it only happens to you from 1st to 2nd... I think the place you had the clutch done f---ed something up. Maybe the shaft that the throw-out bearing rides on wasn't lubed before re-installation. Maybe the old T/O bearing is still in there... |

while we are on the subject of 308 clutches, when I engage my clutch to shift from first to second or third, i hear a whining noise that last for a brief second. The clutch was replaced less than a thousand miles ago, and ever since the clutch was replaced, I had had that noise. It doesn't do it on shifts from 3rd to 4th or fifth..What is it? Clutch is quite hard to engage...harder than in other ferraris. |

Mitchell, funny. but mom drives an Audi A4 with the tiptronic thingy. neither one of my 4 sisters can drive stick. after my father and brother and i bought the cars, few friends and acquaintances purchased them as well. something like 8 3x8s in a year. which meant alot of pre-purchase inspections and major services. it was quite busy for me. |

Yes it is. The farther out it engages, the more slip there is. Early grap is ideal. |

Matt, What makes you think you need a clutch alignment? I've driven many 328 and 308 and have seen many different clutch characteristics, but according to the mechanics, an adjustment wasn't needed. I'd like to know if my clutch needs adjustment. My 328 grabs early (which I like), where my brother's 308 grabs really late (harder to parallel park on a steep hill), and my dad's 328 grabs rather late. Is this an adjustment issue? |

Matt -- For your '78 308 the procedure is described on pages D6 and D7 of the 308GT4 WSM -- see: http://ferrari.jenkins.org/books/308GT4_workshop.pdf |

Matt, where the cable connects to the lever at the bellhousing, there is a jam nut I believe. Im going by memory on the details but you want to loosen the nut and adjust the cable so that you have some pedal movement, maybe a half inch before you feel the pressure of the clutch. You want free play at the top to prevent constant release bearing contact to the spinning pressure plate. There are conversions or newer applications where constant contact is correct but not on your older 308. |

My clutch needs adjustment and I do not want to take it into Ferrari just for this. How would I accomplich this? I looked at the OM but it does not say how to do this. It only says What the parts are. Thanks Matt |
