Matt, it's called "TBTT" (type before thinking through) or "GOAFS" (getting older and forgetting sh-- things) |

Sounds like a slipping alternater belt. Replace it and retention it and I'll bet it goes away. |

Magoo, You are correct about the temp issue. I was typing before I thought it through. M |

Matt, I understand what you are saying but the ambient temp. won't have any effect on the inside of that alt. case if those bearings are heating up and gualding. Friction inside the bad bearing itself would cause the heat and binding whether the ambient temp. was 70degrees or 30degrees. As you say though it may be as simple as a slipping belt. |

Could also be that the water pump is leaking at times and is dripping coolant onto the belt or pulleys. |

Magoo, I thought about that as well but the ambient temp would somewhat rule that out. Factoring in the wind chill and all. He did indicate damp conditions. Possible belt slipping from cold damp metal? M |

Don't overlook the potential problem of the alt. bearings seizing when they get hot causing the armature shaft to bind, thus the belt squeals on the alt. pulley. |

You may notice that the light has a slight glow at night and with the lights on. It gets brighter when the brakes are applied. I had a similar concern as well at one point. I spoke with Ferrari about it they indicated that the light goes on whenever there is an electrical drain of any kind. Not just a bad battery or water pump. If the belt was slipping, then the power to the car would have dropped enough for the light on. |

normally upon start up the alt is requiring the most work. Many have experienced the same noise and it seems to happen more with cooler weather and its effects on the rubber belts. On thing I would be concerned about it the alt light as that is indictive of a possible alt problem. Have you had any battery problems, do the light dim suddenly??? An alt rebuild might be in your future |

New problem for 308 rookie owner: 1. I have a new water pump and belt - 1000 miles 2. I live in Maine and the past three weeks have been cold and damp - not much driving. 3. Yesterday I started my car and it ran it for about 30 miles (nice country drive). When I first started it there was some slight squeeling noise from the belt but it disappeared after about 20 seconds. Car ran great. 4. Later in the evening (about 3 hours after the drive) I took the car out and after driving maybe 5 minutes at only 25 mph the belt really started to screech, the alternator light came on and I pulled over shut the car off and waited. I started back up and the belt was still noisy. Tried this a couple of times and finally no noise. So I limped the car home without any further noise or apparent problem. Alternator light stayed off. 5. This morning I checked the belt tension - seems fine. Started the car (Air Temp - 35 degrees) and let it warm up. After about 5 minutes it settled on a 1200 rpm idle. I ran it slowly through town (25 mph) then onto a secondary route (50mph) and finally onto the interstate (80-90mph). Car ran great, no noise, no problems, and my big grin reappeared. Any ideas why the problems last night? |
