Do you know what your owners manual says about the oil viscosity? It seems to me that many of the cars from that era were using the old SAE 30 single grade oil.

I'm assuming the "breathers" you refer to are some kind of crankcase vent tubes dumping out the bottom of the car. In older engines with higher running clearances, it's probably better to use a higher weight oil like the 20W50 or even a straight weight synthetic like 30W. I suspect your choice of oil may have been too light for the wide clearances.

The 50-50 blend of synthetic oil is made by Valvoline. It is their "Dura-Blend" brand. It is 15w-40. I'm going back to 20w-50 regular oil tonight. I hope that solves the problem.

Peter -- I think the 50/50 refers to compostion (50% normal + 50% synthetic) not a viscosity rating.

The breathers, are these at the front of the motor, as the oil caps? Or the little knobs on top of the valve covers? Excuse my ignorance, but I'm not lucky enough to have gotten my hands dirty from a V-12 Ferrari, so your comment on breathers confuses me. I guess I'm trying to relate it to american V-8's where the breathers are mounted on the valve covers. If that's the case, water should definitely NOT be coming out. The breather's job is to vent, so vapours are normal (if its venting the crankcase).

Just out of curiousity, what brand of oil are you using? I have never seen 50/50W oil, especially synthetic.

First, I want to agree with Rob -- you lucky devil! And not just an outside photo -- do a motor shot as well.
This is just hearsay (sp?), but I've heard it said that different engine oils can have different style detergent systems. Could be that you're just burning off some old deposits now that you're using something new. If it's running well and not making too much of a mess under the bonnet, I'd just drive it for a while and see if it stops (or diminishes to the previous level). I think some amount of blow-by is to be expected. Is yours an early car -- something like '65 or '66? I thought by about '67 all US cars were required to recirculate the crankcase blow-by back into the intake airstream somewhere.

You'll have to wait for the more technically experienced people on the board to answer. However, I would love to see a picture of your car. Several people do this under the Showroom topic. Instructions are on the "Images & Tips" link to the left. Congrats on such a great Ferrari.

I purchased a late model 275 gtb, long nose, torque tube. I have driven it approximately 1500 miles. I did a compression test prior to purchase.
150 on all 12 cyl. The water pump was leaking so I repaired it, and replaced the head gaskets as well/ Upon changing the oil, I switched to a 50/50 synthetic type. I recently took it out for a spin, and decieded to check under the car while it was at idle. To my surprise the breathers were emitting a small amount of light vapor, (not water), on both sides. It does this even after the car is warm. Is this normal?
