Thanks Verell... I'll try the setscrew idea on the front holders since I don't see an easy way to get a hammer in there to set the pins. |

FWIW: Use a small brass or SS allen drive set screw instead of the taper pin. You can back it out & remove the wire guides when you want to. Once you drive in the taper pin, the odds are you can't get the guide out w/o destroying it. |

I have had item 1 happen with another Bosch CIS system, exactly as you state it. |

Two things I learned working on my 328 last weekend... 1. Cold idle was low and rough. As it warmed up idle "loped" sometimes causing the engine to die. I first searched for vac leaks and tested the aux air valve. All checked OK. I decided to verify the throttle plate closed position so I took of the flex hose. I found a black, dirty, almost oily deposit on the throttle body near the butterfly edge. I cleaned this off (the plate position was correct), and the idle was now perfect. I also found I had a smoother and more linear adjustment with the idle adjust screw(vac bypass). 2. For the last two years my plug wire holders have been coming loose from the cam covers. I've been pushing them in and giving them a slight twist so they stay in place. I finally removed the wires to see how I could fix them permanently and found the taper lock pin. How about that! All you have to do is use a punch and hammer to push the plastic pin in so it spreads and locks the holder securely to the cover. This is not obvious unless you remove the wire directly over the stud for the cam cover. Or.... if you removed your wire holders and tipped them upside down, you may have lost the taper lock pin. |
